    AAI mountaineering beginner course

I've taken a 3-day thing on Rainier with a guiding company (Alpine Ascents) in 2007 and also took a 6-day mountaineering course with them in Alaska in 2008. Both times I went by myself and didn't know anyone else going. Overall, it was fine and exciting to meet new people. Chances of running...

Mt. Whitney via the East Buttress (III 5.7) route

Nah, the Mountaineers looked heinuous, especially with the upper section filled with ice. We hiked off on the trail. Cool pic, and nice job on the East Face! Its airy! Thanks for the photo compliments!

Mt. Whitney via the East Buttress (III 5.7) route

The climbers trail is in good shape, considering it's a climbers trail.. it switchbacks some, has some rock cairns. The lower sections actually resemble a trail. The upper section starting after Upper Boyscout lake is some talus and a bit rougher. But still really nice and trail-like. I had...

Alex Honnald - free soloing video

And in the case of Steph Davis' free solo of the Diamond.. She had gone in alone and solo'ed it and then later went back with the cameras and did it again. Although I'm not sure how much time passed between climbs.

Mt. Whitney via the East Buttress (III 5.7) route

Thanks guys! Going from sea level to 8400' was a breeze, we drove it. ;) But it was fine. Personally, I don't feel the affects of altitude until about 12,000ft. We didn't want to linger high or take time to acclimate, our acclimatization plan was to not have one. I felt good the entire...

Mt. Whitney via the East Buttress (III 5.7) route

THE ROUTE The day before we were at 100 feet below sea level in Death Valley, so we were pretty psyched to snag a walk-in patch of dirt at the overnight hikers campsite at Whitney Portal at 8,300 ft. Pre-dawn rolls around and we start our 5-mile approach on the climber's trail up the North...

    Up or Down?

down. the chances of finding a viewpoint sufficient enough for you to realize "oh! there i am!" is unlikely in my opinion. especially in the forested white mountains. only case when i can think of going uphill is when you are in an area you've been before and know the trail crosses over the...
