    RIP Paradox :(

I am deeply saddened to hear about this. I first met John on the summit of Moosilauke several years ago, as we were among the many hikers joining Jay H on his Northeast 115 finish. Because John and I corresponded so much on VFTT, it was like meeting an old friend. We exchanged a big bear...

    Cog Railway path

Hi all, Hiked Monroe and Washington Saturday via the traditional up Ammo/ down Jewell loop. Noticed a few hikers were descending a path to the right of the Cog Railway. Was wondering if that is a legal path, and if so, whether it is easier to descend than Gulfside and Jewell. My apologies...

    Blueberries in the Whites?

Rumford Whitecap in western Maine yielded great bounties this year. My wife and I picked 5 pints in relatively short order. If there is a better mountain for blueberries, please let me know.

Best shoes/tread material for wet conditions

My experience: 5-10's Stealth Rubber is fantastic, with La Sportiva trail runners (Wildcat, Raptors) also very good. I have recently been going with the La Sportiva Wildcats, as they have a wide toebox, which I need.

    Black Flies

Sawyer Broad Spectrum is great. Here is a similar product to Sawyer Broad Spectrum called Rainbow Jungle Formula. It has the same key ingredients, but is a bit heavier duty and comes in an aerosol. This product is mostly sold to the utilities industry for their field workers. It is the best...

    Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Greg, as usual, you live up to your VFTT name :) Thanks for the great information. We will be staying around greater Phoenix. A trip to Sedona is a definite. Camelback may be on the horizon, but I am more likely going to do a couple hikes in the nearby McDowell Sonoran Preserve, as they are...

Hi all, my wife and I are heading to Arizona this year. One place we are looking to hit is Saguaro National Park, outside Tucson. Am looking for the following information: Which side of the park do you like better - West or East? Do you have any recommended dayhikes? Many thanks! Marty

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

Hi, Call me a wimp, BUT.... After careful consideration about hiking in the cold on Saturday or Sunday (cannot hike on Monday), I decided to forget about it. After doing several hikes in similar conditions, I decided that it is no longer fun. I also worry about frozen digits, eyelids frozen...

Hi Tom, For what it is worth, I have used Kahtoola KTS Steel crampons on many occasions in the Presidentials and Franconia Ridge with great success. Regards, Marty
