    baxter state park

Reasonable is a relative term in coastal New England in the summer. That being said, you might want to consider the Anchorage Inn in Portsmouth http://www.anchorageinns.com/Welcome_Portsmouth.html. It is right off Route 95, close to the State Liquor Store. My sister (from Penn...

    Jefferson via Caps Ridge, 6/7/2014

45 years to the top of a mountain.:) ;) Earl, it was a pleasure to get out hiking with you once again. 5 weeks between hikes together is far too long. Your story and pix were great as always and you were right, I did get some great views going from Jeff to Monroe. Saw lots of patches of...

There were no essentially black flies on Saturday, June 7 on Caps Ridge Trail to Jefferson, multiple trails over to Monroe and down the Ammo Ravine Trail. That was sweet!

    The Carters, 5/3/2014

hey Earl, that was one sweet hike with two great people and some great weather. Your photos captured it well - the views, the running water, the snow, the people. It was also nice to do a new trail (North Imp). Have to admit that I was sore from the hike, possibly from the soft snow...

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

You are so right on both counts. The bear line works great at Chimney Pond for bears, but it was not squirrel proof a few years ago. One red squirrel was jumping from a balsam fir and getting into food bags. We told the Ranger. He was out pruning/cutting some trees the next morning. Marty

    How To Hike Katahdin

That is a very good point and probably what the Ranger will tell me :). If the Togue Pond gatehouse opens at 5 AM, then leaving at 4 or 4:30 may be the case. Regards, Marty

    How To Hike Katahdin

The Reservation FAQs state the following: 11. Do campers need a Day Use Parking Pass (DUPR) to hike Katahdin? No, but let the campground Ranger know of your plans the day/night before your intended hiking day. They can provide information on weather and trail conditions and suggest a...

Hey Earl, It is always great hiking with you, even though everyone on the trail knew you or about you, whereas Jessica and I were known to nobody. :p You are definitely the Governor of the Tripyramid province. :D You are also a very fine butt slider! As usual, your slide show and captions...
