    Sleeping pad - winter dayhikes

Hi, I currently carry a partial Ridge Rest closed cell foam pad on the exterior of my backpack on winter hikes. It is there primarily as insulation for an emergency overnight situation, not for sitting. The primary problem I have with it is that it is bulky. My questions are: 1. Do you...

Where would you buy (Location, location, location...) ??

Slight correction: South Arm is on Richardson Lake, whereas Toothaker Island is on Mooselookmeguntic. Most peple there either haul a boat and go to the public boat launch, rent a slip on the northern end of the lake (Haines Landing), or have rights to a private landing. Living on that island...

Well so much for barebooting some early winter 4Ks

Exactly. They keep a stake at the hut to measure the snow. I am sure you will notice it when you visit. For me, the best thing about the AMC hut reports are the trail conditions and the amount of snow at the stake. Have fun!

Hi all, A work colleague handed me the Boston Globe today, with this article about the New England Winter 4,000 Footer Club, featuring a quote from Eric Savage. Enjoy. http://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/2014/01/07/the-winter-footer-club-members-hike-new-...

    Ammonoosuc in the winter

I would guess that one would use the Westside Trail to get to Jefferson from Monroe without going near the top of Washington to pick up Gulfside. I did the Westside twice in the summer and thought it might be scary to do in the winter, due to the steep slopes below it. Am I wrong? Any other...

    Looping The Willey Range, 12/28/2013

Earl, it's been nearly 5 months since our last Zealand-Bonds traverse, so another one sounds good, especially March. I'll have to get Bobby to go, so he can lose another hat, you can locate South Twin and we can pick fights with each other: ;) Send me an email or PM any time...

    Scrambles in New England

Totally agree. I also suggest that you add Bemis Mountain Peak 1 (Appalachian Trail) in western Maine - definite 2 to 2+. I also noticed that you did not include "The Horn" in your NH list, given our scrambles up and down that peak last month :p You seem to do outstanding work when bored...

Favorite Family-Friendly Hikes in New England?

Hi Greg, Up in Western Maine, two family friendly hikes pop into mind: Bald Mountain in Rangeley (Oquossoc) and Rumford Whitecap in Andover, ME. The latter has a bonus from mid-July through mid-August: it has the most blueberries of any mountain I have seen. One other thing: Tumbledown Mt...

I Hate Down - Am I Missing Something?

Smartwool makes wool glove liners that you can buy on Campmor for $19.99. I have a cold hand condition and they work much better for me than synthetic liners. The downside of these wool glove liners is durability. They wear out at the fingertips, so you need to be a skilled at sewing the...

Most Difficult New England Winter 4kers

This sums it up nicely. Do not underestimate how difficult breaking trail is. Of all my winter hikes, the most difficult I did was Webster-Jackson in a high snow year. My friend and I decided to break out the Webster part of the loop in chest deep snow.:confused: In addition, the...

    mountaineer snowshoes

I am sorry for all that had a bad experience with the Lightning Ascents. I had a great experience with them and I am not alone. I've had mine through 7 years of hard use and they are still going strong. Maybe MSR has quality control issues with them and I got lucky. I once bought a pair of...
