    Stratton's Stewards

Sue, thanks for posting this most excellent article. When hiking Stratton via the AT in 2008, my hiking partner and I ran into a cow and calf moose right on the trail, who appeared to be quite tame. We decided to inquire with the caretakers about these friendly moose. Hugh and Jeanne invited...

    Government shutdown...

On Saturday, Lincoln Woods was open and the parking lot was filled with leaf peeper vehicles and leaf peeper buses. Bathrooms were closed. The pay station tubes were sealed in plastic with signage indicating no fee. Marty

    Quill Hill ME, 9/27/13

Roy, Definitely a nice view from there. When we had my sister and her husband visiting our camp in Rangeley, we rented a four person ATV and took it to the top of Quill Hill. The view is very, very impressive of the mountains, lakes and ponds. Marty

    Tumbledown and Little Jackson 9-29-13

The cliff area, with a chimney, was once part of the Loop Trail, which was a true loop. That part of the loop was closed when the chimney collapsed several years ago. Old trail guides will still show the loop. Marty

North from Elephant Mountain / South Arm Road

Agree with Daniel Eagan, with a few corrections/clarifications: 1. The road past Elephant Mt. Road is paved to the Richardson Lake public boat launch. It then turns to dirt. The road is always passable and is usually well-maintained by the State, which owns most of the road. There was some...

Once in a Blue Moon! The Maine Event! (Merged 4 parts)

Hey Pete, that was one classy and well written Trip Report. I felt like I was there with you, having done all those peaks several times. Glad you enjoyed hiking in western Maine. I guess it would be hard not to with the weather that you had! Good luck on your 115 finish, when the time comes...

    Baxter State Park Questions

I got two bars on my cellphone at Abol Campground and five bars on the summit of North Brother back in 2009. The carrier was Verizon. Marty

Backpacking the Pemi with a baby + Owl’s Head! Aug. 17-18-19

Completely agree on both fronts. Julie, this was a great TR. You and Jean Sebastien should be proud parents. Hope to see all three of you out on the trails. There is little doubt that Victor will grow to love hiking. If anyone was born to peakbag, it would be him! Regards, Marty

Great pix Earl, including all of us "on the rocks". I also greatly enjoyed Bobby's pirate outfit, which he donned after losing his hat :p Hope our paths cross soon. Marty

Yeah, the glare from my bald dome on a bright day could not only be surprising, but downright blinding  Anyway, it was great to see you and Mike again! Bobby and Earl, it was an absolute pleasure to hike with you and to learn from a real expert where South Twin is.;) Great TR as...

    Worst bug encounters ever

I would guess that those are deer flies, Becca. They are the most annoying insect of all, in my humble opinion.

    Worst bug encounters ever

Hi all, A group of four of us hiked North, Middle and South Weeks in NH yesterday (June 30), as a up/back via the York Pond Trail and Kilkenny Ridge Trails. After some post-hike reflection and viewing my myriad of bite welts, I believe it was the worst insect conditions ever encountered. Bug...

    Wildcat O&B

As of yesterday, the ski trails were still officially closed to hiking. That being said, we talked to a couple of people who did ascend/descend along the edges of the ski trail yesterday. They just stuck along the edges of the woods on the north side of the Polecat Trail. We went up Wildcat...
