    New England Gems

Great Western ME list! I would suggest adding Bemis Mountain Peak 2 and Cranberry Peak Bigelow to it. Regards, Marty

Extreme Sledding in or near the Whites

Greg, Sledding on one of those on trails may be as hazardous to those ascending as it would be for you. With butt sliding, you can slow yourself down with snowshoes and your hands. Not so sure about that mini-luge. Thanks for the memory on the extreme ironing, which we saw in 2006 on...

An Epic (for me) Hike of North & South Twin/ Galehead Mountain 2-23-13- 1st 1/2

Hey Chris, Excellent TR and nice job on a most challenging hike. I had no idea about your connection with Dave Bear, who is one of my favorite people.:D Great meeting you at McDonald's, too. Loved your shot of Dave on top of S. Twin fighting the elements. Good thing he did not take an...

Views from Wherever - What are your favorite viewpoints for various summits?

From Hamlin Ridge on Katahdin, you can see Baxter Peak, Knife's Edge, Cathedral Ridge, Chimney Pond, Basin Ponds, Tabeland, Howes Peaks and a whole bunch of other great stuff. Definitely my fave. Marty

GMA Hikes To Summit of Mt. Washington

It just aired this morning. Kind of cool. My wife and her friend are big fans of Ginger Zee, who was on the hike. Have to admit that her stock rose with me after doing that. Did they do the Lions Head route? They said they did 5 miles and over 4,000 s.f. elevation. Never went that way in...

    Views from the Carribean?

Tom, Before we settled on Kauai for our second honeymoon (and that trip is coming up soon), we were seriously looking at St. Lucia. I was definitely looking to hike Gros Piton, although I think they require you to use a guide. Here is a tour article...

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

I have to agree on this. While I have bought from EMS over the years, I've had better luck researching products and finding the best deals online. I admittedly do not like to go shopping and do not feel the need to look and touch gear & apparel before buying. Once in a while, I have to do an...

Drawing the line between hiker and climber

So will I now have to "hike the stairs" in my home, rather than climbing them? ;)

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Since the OP is from Maine, I thought I would point out a couple of easy, yet rewarding hikes in the western part of the state: Bald Mountain in Oquossoc is a very nice 2.6 mile RT snowshoe hike. The snow smooths out the ledges nicely and it is usually packed out. Views are spectacular from...

    Saddleback for sale...

That appears to be the predominant feeling in the area. The family greatly improved the ski area, have been good corporate citizens and opened up new opportunities to make Saddleback a year-round resort. This includes creating new hiking and mountain biking trails and a purchasing a marina...

Fastest way to the Caps Ridge Trailhead from the South

Thank you Tim and Kevin! Just curious: would that be the route of choice if I decided to come up 302 from Bartlett? Am wondering if the Base Road would still be fastest, as opposed to taking the Mt. Clinton Road from Crawford Notch. Have a fabulous Thanksgiving. Marty

Fastest way to the Caps Ridge Trailhead from the South

Hi all, I have never done the Caps Ridge Trail, but was thinking of doing it before the Jefferson Notch Road closes or becomes treacherous. Was wondering if you could recommend the fastest way to the trailhead from the south (i.e, Massachusetts). Appreciate your advice. Thanks, Marty

    Heel lifts on snowshoes

If you buy MSR's, their heel lifts are called Televators. This has led to some fine singing on the trail. Jason Berard and I sang the following ascending the Osceolas from the Kanc several years ago: Lovin' The Televator by Aerosmith Smooth Televator, by Sade I just want to Televate, by Rare...
