    Snow Totals

Enough snow to make it look like winter on top of Jackson.

    Emma's 48x2

Congratulations, Emma! And to Kevin and Judy, too. And no, we've never done Huntington and I feel safe in saying that Emma has done it twice more than Atticus will ever do it. Glad the new meds are going well for the little girl. Look forward to meeting you three out on the trails again.

    Where Would You Live?

Lincoln, New Hampshire...where we will be moving in...let's see...36 hours. (Doing little more than writing and hiking for a year.)

Mount Washington by Great Gulf, 6/30

Congratulations Mohamed. Quite the hike. And yet in some ways I think it pales in comparison to what you accomplished earlier this week. I heard you hiked Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack and Liberty in that high heat of mid-week. (And then walked back to your car to boot!) Pretty...

Chased By A Moose On Airline

Ed, they weren't law enforcement officials, the IRS, or relatives of old girlfriends were they? Glad you two escaped the mad moose and weren't moose mashed.

    Tripyramids, Whiteface, Passaconaway

Last summer I parked my car at Oliverian trail head, unhitched my bike from the bike rack, put Atticus in the basket and pedaled down to the Pine Bend Brook trailhead and we hiked back. A great way to do it and easily done with one car. The Sleepers ended up being my favorite part of this...

Heads It’s The Osceolas, Tails It’s The Bald Faces. Heads Wins

I would agree. Especially in our case. The little guy climbs it like a monkey, doing much better than I do. In the winter we go around and he has no trouble there either. I wish I could say the same. Last year we also saw a huge bull mastiff go right up the chimney.

    Goodbye to an old friend...

You got it right TMax, I was moved by your eloquent post and the love you shared with Luke. Thank you for that. In a speech in the Far East Merton said, “The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and...

    Mt. Pemi traverse, May 3

Excellent, Mohamed. While short, this is one of my favorite peaks and the views are wonderful atop the dramatic bald edges. Have you been to Hedgehog yet this year? Speaking of other shorter but good bang-for-the-buck peaks.

New White Mountain Guide is Out

A note on the availability of AMC Guides at the 4,000-footer awards: In past years I believe Mike Dickerman has brought various books along and has given a good percentage of the profits to the 4,000-Foot Club for trail maintenance and whatever else they spend their money on. I expect that...

New White Mountain Guide is Out

Support local bookstores. Buy your new AMC White Mountain Guide from something other than a superstore on-line if it is at all possible. Or like Mohamed, consider making your purchase from Steve Smith, a small businessman who has given much of his time to any hiker who has ever sought advice...

Didn't I see a Seinfeld episode about this?

    And Two Makes Thirty!

Congratulations on getting out, Ed (& Duffy). I was wondering if you'd switch days so that you could hike another day than Saturday. Glad it worked out for you. This puts you in good reach of finishing your winter peaks next year as you had hoped.

#67 A Spectacular finish on Old Speck

Congratulation Mary Ellen and Rachel. There is something special in sharing these mountains with those we love whether they be family or friends (human or otherwise). This is an achievement you two will be able to look back on with fondness when you are both in your 90s in some Maine nursing...

    Attaching Patches

Hi Beth, This same question came up when a friend of mine asked for the best place to display them. I suggested a frame. She went with it and loves it and I must admit I think they look very classy in there and will be well-protected for years to come. Tom

New 6 Flags Ride: The Fool Killer

Sorry to have missed you Albee. I'm sure we'll bump into each other some day. Wonderful day to be on the Tripyramids!

    Thanksgiving and our winter quest

Somewhere in the past year and a half I’ve fallen utterly and hopelessly in love with these mountains. In that span of time my life has been transformed. A middle aged fat guy who spent most of his time sitting around turned into a middle aged fat guy who loves to hike. And Atticus turned...
