Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Just a soul crushing wall of spruce. :p I just realized... unfortunately, the dead tree reinforced scree wall will be perfect for providing rocks for a nice fire ring for some campers on the Bond summit and the dead, dried trees will provide nice, readily available fuel for them! Awesome! It...

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

Try ditching the heavy shoes for the backpacking if you're already using trail runners for dayhiking. I switched to trail runners for backpacking and I'd never go back to boots when carrying a heavy pack. All the ankle support is already there... -Dr. Wu

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

Mix of the first three: I've been running roads and mixed trail / road in Nike Free 5.0 v4 and now Nike Free 3.0 v2 -- both great shoes, especially if you want to start with a "minimal" shoe but not go straight for the Five Fingers Also been using Inov-8 (Roclite 295) which are great, minimal...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Anyone have a picture of the one on Pierce? Again, why not put a little path to the actual summit. You know peakbaggers are going to be going there -- path, scree wall, or nothing. Could this be a new, more militant stance from the Forest Service? I heard there are similar scree walls now on...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Nothing -- sign, scree wall, path, closing the summit, taser-armed steward -- is going to prevent 100% of people from walking around in the alpine areas. Some of those methods (taser, scree wall, closing the summit) would be extremely counter-productive in my opinion. "Education" by signs or...

    Bond-Zealand Traverse with 1 Car - 8/8/10

If I had my Inov-8's and they agreed to go over Hale and sleep at the Hut for an hour or two I might have been able to do it. -Dr. Wu

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

I'd skip the summit steward for Mt. Bond -- such a tiny area. But a few paths and a little sign is a lot more diplomatic and effective. It'll give the illusion that the Forest Service (even though it seems like the Guyot caretaker (AMC) made the wall the Forest Service certainly is aware of it)...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

It could certainly be managed better. Instead of the scree wall (forget about the ugly brush) a little path could lead to some view points. That would probably keep 99% of the people off the alpine vegetation (of which there is nearly none right now). -Dr. Wu

    Bond-Zealand Traverse with 1 Car - 8/8/10

Four of us: Wu, Jess, and two (non-VFTT) friends Doug and Lara were going to hike Owl's Head. Jess is finishing her list and Owl's Head is on it. We all drove up together on Sunday and while they were all sleeping in the car my over-active imagination crafted a more appropriate (and practical)...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

If the forest service is going to tear down the large cairn on West Bond and the sign (!) on Owl's Head for being "non-conforming structures" why don't they remove this? -Dr. Wu

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Hey, thanks for that info. I think a path and a small sign would be 100% more effective. Even Giggy would respect it. :p If it is the Guyot caretaker, certainly the forest service has noticed the wall and would do something about it. -Dr. Wu

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

There is a 3' high scree wall, reinforced by dead trees (!) that blocks off the entire southern section of the small alpine zone on Mt. Bond. Anyone that has ever hiked Mt. Bond knows there there was always a tiny little divider there already -- this new one is large, ugly and very...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

Wow, that's rough stuff... hope you're on the mend. Look, I would never "go off and do my own thing" in plenty of scenarios. If I was hiking with my mid-60's dad, no matter how much he tells me to go ahead I'm sticking right with him. There's a time and a place for everything. -Dr. Wu

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

Here's a happy ending story. A tale of "False Abandonment" from Timmus's final ADK46 peak where we did Big Slide. They missed a junction, I lagged behind and went the right way and... Having a very slim grasp on reality to begin with, this was a confusing situation. I asked the guy I met several...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

Yeah, if you want to stick together as a group or you don't feel as comfortable and your group leaves you, yeah, you've got a problem... most people eventually hike solo or find a group of like-minded people to hike with. Feeling abandoned sucks. But if it's a group of friends that all feel...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

I think there are two scenarios here. There's the "see ya" scenario where people gotta get a peak even if there's someone lagging behind, maybe injured, maybe has a history of health problems, maybe is not an experienced hiker. etc. Scenario two is you're with a group of people you know well...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

I agree, and I like the social aspect (usually). Actually, I most of the time hike with other people. But people have to understand that different people are going to work together differently. Sure, when we planned a recent Great Range Traverse we talked beforehand about what people wanted to...

46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

Whatever. Few weeks ago we were doing a long hike and some wanted to do an additional peak, some didn't. We split off, met up later in the hike. You're really gonna sit there and tell me there's something wrong with that? Look, this poor dude could have gone on a hike alone too and died alone...
