I succumbed to the hype and bought some Vibram FiveFingers

I had a pair of KSO's a few years back -- basically no protection underneath at all and I found them perfectly fine for hiking and I liked them quite a bit. However, I did not like them for running the rocky trails in New England... I find that I must pound harder on my feet because it was...

    Winter's Back!

This is the worst thing that I've ever heard in my entire life. I guess that I won't be heading to the Whites for a while... -Mr. Kill

    Au Revoir, Resolution Shelter

It would be nice if they did something along the lines of Wild River area where when they removed the shelters they put in nice, primitive tentpads. -Dr. Wu

    Stillwater Junction History Questions

Interesting that the 1984 map shows a trail from Shoal Pond Trail (near a crossing) to Norcross Pond Trail, in the vicinity of the junction with Carrigain Notch Trail. -Dr. Wu

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

Roy: where were these crossings (and Cable Car!?) It seems to me that building a trail that would connect from a location just North of Stillwater Junction on the Shoal Pond Trail (maybe in the vicinity of the major crossing about 0.5 miles north of Stillwater) to the area where the footbridge...

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

What about cutting a trail from Stillwater Junction to the Thoreau Falls Trail, along the North Bank of the river? There's already no bridge at Stillwater Junction and there might be old logging roads that they can utilize... -Dr. Wu

Rumors about Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal

It would be a real bummer if they removed that bridge. The Thoreau Falls Trail is a gem. Maybe the forest service will blaze a new trail alongside the North side of the river connecting Thoreau Falls Trail to Stillwater Junction. That would be pretty awesome. That would make losing that dumb...

Short Essey on Cell Phones & Wilderness

The guy obviously hasn't kept with the times. You can use your phone now to take pictures and in a pinch, at least the iPhone has a cool app that you can use the camera flash as a flash light. Maybe the author can use it to find his brain in the dark. There's an app for that too. -Dr. Wu

Most Popular Mountain/Hill names in NH?

I'm going to go with "Mt. Tom" -- there's the one in Zealand Notch and also one by me in Easthampton MA. -Dr. Wu

    Lizards above 4000'

It wasn't a newt and certainly not an eft. I guess it could be a mole but I felt like the tail was longer. It wasn't much larger than a mouse, thin, with a fatish tale and kind of pointy shaped. It looked, to me, scaly rather than furry. But I'll defer to those that say that there really...

    Lizards above 4000'

Sounds reasonable. I bet the lizard that I saw ate the snake that you saw and the toad that Little Rickie saw. -Dr. Wu

    Lizards above 4000'

I forgot to ask about this. When I was on Mt. Hight over the last Columbus Day Weekend, I was just kind of wandering around the summit when I saw what I thought was a little lizard dart into the brush. I got a barely decent look at it -- it definitely wasn't a mouse: it had a fatter tail and...

Chocorua and Paugus on a perfect November day

You had some good pictures. I like Chocoura and haven't been there in quite a while. Maybe a winter trip is in order. -Mr. Kill

Mt. Toby Trail Race November 13, 2011

This is a 14 mile trail race with 2300' elevation gain. It starts at the base of Mt. Toby which is in Sunderland MA (about 10 miles or so North of Umass Amherst). From there you take a combination of dirt jeep roads and fire roads 7 miles up to the summit which is at about 1300' and has a fire...

Attention Peakbaggers! Soliciting list / peak data

Wow! People were generally surprised when they found out that I hadn't finished the NH48 (and now they're surprised when they find out that I am working on the Grid) but this is a bigger surprise! Way cool! Don't run with the crowd, man! -Dr. Wu

Pat & Audrey, thanks again for hosting this party! It was awesome as usual (this was my 4th year?) and great seeing you. Great seeing Sherpa Kroto for the frist time in like 3 years. I'm glad I was on my best behavior. -Dr. Wu

Hancock Notch Trail / Trail Head ?

Look Both Ways Before You Cross They'll probably just end up closing the trail permanently. How many years has that trailhead been there and how many hikers have been hit by a car there? My guess is zero. It's pretty easy to "look both ways" and cross the street... -Mr. Kill
