"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

It took you 15 years because in the meantime you were out winning ultras and setting FKT's! :p:D To be honest, at the time (~5 years ago) seeing names like Ed Hawkins (obsessive, lots of time on his hands, obsessive), Sue J (trail running god), Cath Goodwin (hiking god) associated with something...

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck Saturday 11/5/11

Plastic on the Furniture Looks like that plastic has to go back on the couches and furniture again. I'm coming. -Dr. Wu PS. Jess is coming as well.

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

I actually made, just now, a "Grid" list on JMP but I haven't populated it because A) it seems really annoying to try and fill iin anything and B) I can't remember when I did what anyway. I'd basically either be lying if I filled in a blank so I might as well start fresh. Good news is I might...

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

I'm one of you all now. And you're all one of me. Blood relation via. the 48. -Dr. Wu

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

I doubt it. The Grid is nicely packaged up and now seems attainable because more "ordinary" people are working on it and completing it. Also, it probably gives people something to do after simply completing the NH48 (now what do I work on?). It's also not as excessive as say the 48x48 or...

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

And I bet you're still probably crankin' out the miles, Tom. Sounds like you got a great location... I never hit the Bigelows before so... -Dr. Wu

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

Doubtful. (not that you're seriously implying that it is). 864 individual hikes vs. probably 200-300 individual hikes to complete the grid. Plus the Trailwrights list is even more arbitrary in terms of criteria than the NH48 (which at this point is pretty much ingrained in people's heads)...

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

For Jess, finishing the 48 is a more meaningful thing and I think she'd like to have a lot of people there and whatnot. I thought that my finishing at the same time would detract from her accomplishment so I went ahead and randomly finished on Wildcat "D" simply because Jess needed those two...

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

No, I think the grid is cool, just not for me. I like obsessing about things but in a random, unfocused way. I'm just amazed how many finishers there have been in the last year or so compared to the entire last decade. I think another thing is enough people have "broken the seal" that it seems...

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

Back in 2004, "the list" (NH48) was still a big thing. And to a lot of people, it still is and if they finish it and they're proud of their accomplishment, I wouldn't take anything away from them. Way back 50 years ago the NH48 (or 46 back then) was a real big thing. Now, I guess there's easier...

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

Mr. Kill, formerly known as Dr. Wu to some of you, and “complete jerk” to all of you, finished the NH48 on Wildcat “D” this past weekend. It actually took me about 25 years to do it. Some people erroneously thought that I had previously completed the 48 but this was in fact, fiction. The first...

    Leave no Trace...Really?

Are you saying that goats become addicted to eating **** and are willing to maim and kill humans while trying to acquire it? You piaint an awful picture, Mr. Paul, one that makes me fear each time that I dig a cat hole in my backyard from here on in. 5+ pages on drinking pee pee dishwater...

Rattlesnake Gutter Road has a new "gutter"

That actually is a pretty cool road! I ran the Cave Hill Classic race and it went on that road. You feel like you're in the Mahoosucs or something. Way cool area. -Dr. Wu

Bushwack from Carrigain to Vose Spur

Do you like spruce? I went to the notch between Carrigain and Vose Spur to visit the cool-ass talus field there and that was quite slow going and thick. Didn't go all the way to carriagian. It's not a standard route, that's for sure... -Dr. Wu

Speed hiker attacked during record attempt on the Appalachian trail

How is it a "hate crime"? Big deal, they roughed the guy up a little -- probably fake anyway. Dude probably beat himself up, fight club style, for a little extra publicity. -Dr. Wu

    Wolf Spider's Intelligence

    Wolf Spider's Intelligence

I always see those cute little wolf spiders when I'm hiking around Mt. Washington. Ironically, I rarely ever see them anywhere else like Franconia Ridge. Only in the Presidentials. Anyway, they seem friendly enough and I hear they only eat other bugs (maybe we can import a few more of them up...

Do people avoid the Daniel Webster Scout Trail?

Going up, I think it's an awesome trail... nice woods walk until it gets steep then a lot of boulders to negotiate. You hit treeline pretty early and the climbing is fun after that! Great trail. Going down after a Presi Traverse after we went below treeline it seemed to go on forever but it...
