A little armchair hillwalking for your enjoyment

No Trees! What's the highest peak, like 4000'? Looks like there are about 300 Munros (above 3k). Sweet pictures. Summer trip! What is airfare Logan --> Glasgow run ya? -Dr. Wu

The Hancocks in Less Than 19 Hours

Actually, this might be a good bushwhack for you, Farmer, for the winter record thing. Good route to go Hancock --> Carrigain if you don't feel like going over the Captain. -Dr. Wu

The Hancocks in Less Than 19 Hours

Don't worry -- that whole area between Hancock and Carrigain is good at turning hikes into near overnighters... Did you manage to hit that pond? It's on some maps and you can actually see it if you poke around to some view points from the summit of South Hancock. I know a few people that have...

    Hancocks Bushwhack - Skidder Questions

There's a pond to the South of South Hancock... I believe Steve Smith has gone there a few times. I went looking for it once but got sidetracked going up Mt. Huntington instead. SE/E of Hancock is mostly the horrible Captain area. Probably the best person to ask is the rumored deceased...

Save the date: Saturday November 6, Pat and Audrey's potluck

Thank You Very Much, Pat and Audrey: this was most definitely a great party! Jess and I (Mr. Kill) had a blast. Maybe instead of waiting for next year we should just do it the first Saturday of every month! And, contrary to what anyone has heard, I had nothing to do with any conversations about...

closed cell booties insulate light weight footwear for snowshoeing

I tore them up wearing them with microspikes. I think they say somewhere to only wear them with snowshoes. I figured Microspikes would be ok but they weren't... -Dr. Wu

    when nature calls

I think I taught him how to make a Midwinter Hotdog. -Dr. Wu

    when nature calls

Actually, this is similar to what's called a "Midwinter Hotdog"... It only works for cold months. You're hiking on a cold day and you got to go so you crap your pants. The poop warms you up for a while. Once it cools off, it freezes, so you can just reach in, take out the frozen turd, and...

    Road closures

She just said "Garfield" -- don't you park at the South gate during winter which is like 0.8 miles to the Garfield TH? I'm not looking at a map but I remember it being close. Even if it's 1.6 miles each way, what's that? an extra hour added to your hike? Still better than Lincoln Woods! :D -Dr. Wu

    Road closures

Probably... but it doesn't mean I like Winter as much as I like summer... -Dr. Wu

    Road closures

Ugh... When is it going to be summer again? :( -Dr. Wu
  17. dr_wu002

    Road closures

Early November. However, the whole hike to Garfield is so ridiculously easy that the extra tiny bit of road walking you do when the gate is closed is relatively meaningless. It's actually a nice walk. The walk on Sawyer Road to Carrigain is longer (~2 miles each way) but not terrible either...

    Stating the obvious- Traction Required

The only thing "required" is common sense. Last November we had some pretty steamy days, glad I didn't bring traction then... However, this is what happens when you leave common sense home. Oh, and this too. :p -Dr. Wu

    Training with barefoot running

I know when I wear the Vibram Five Fingers I shorten up my stride considerably because I need to be much more choosy about where I land my feet at all times. I don't think I flail around but I shorten my stride by raising my knees a little higher but I don't think it's so out of the ordinary...
