Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

That's what they might have told you but you absolutely know that's not the case. The saw the thread. They saw the word "stupid" then they saw "Dr. Wu" and then they jumped into action. Notice how they're scrambling right now. That thing will be down and they'll probably put the caretakers head...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

I think it's because of me. Probably they will listen if they see Dr. Wu endorse it. They will act, quickly, when they see the work of a Rational Mind making suggestions. -Dr. Wu

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

Do you remember the Ranger that you spoke to? I want to see if I can dynamite the scree wall. Serious. I don't think the summit of Bond is in the wildnerness area -- all I'd need is a few people (Jason and his sheep might be able to help) to help me lug a ton or two of TNT to the summit and...

    Guyot Shelter?

Much like the scree wall: another bad -- and stupid -- idea. The Overflow sights are not necessarily ideal but they succeed in concentrating the "damage" done on the ridge. Now, people are only going to be encouraged to make new sites wherever they can. Awesome. Hey, there's plenty of firewood...

bog bridge and general condition of Shoal Pond trail.

I was there in November and the part south of Ethan Pond was a mess. Beyond that it was pretty nice. Once those bog bridges on the Northern Part of the trail completely rot/disappear that 1-2 mile section will basically be impassable. -Dr. Wu

Good seeing you guys finish on Bondcliff! And thanks for the beer at the end. I was pretty tired and that hit the spot. -Dr. Wu

Camp at old Desolation Shelter site?

I don't recall seeing signs or anything there. But, that entire area is wide open and there are lots of great camping spots on both sides of the stream there. -Dr. Wu

Camp at old Desolation Shelter site?

The whole Desolation area is pretty open and there are tons of old logging roads and camping areas and stuff -- you can find a lot campsites in that area. the bridge being out is irrelevant because you can hike in via. East Side Trail to Wilderness Trail from Lincoln Woods. -Dr. Wu

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

The problem is a silly wall isn't going to stop a ********* setting up a tent. Worse, the wall with the reinforced dead trees will provide a fire ring and fuel. Conservation is good but some rational thought has to go into it. -Dr. Wu

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

Bingo! That's why I keep telling people I love the minimal shoes.... the Vibram Five Fingers are several steps up from trail runners even in terms of stability. Despite the fact that they have no tread and almost no grip, I feel completely stable with them (ankles), don't have any slips/falls...

    Bond-Zealand Traverse with 1 Car - 8/8/10

They are stupid looking, I guess, but they're not functionless... they worked pretty well on the terrain last weekend (Cannon / Passaconaway / Flume) and were great as a hiking shoe on the Bonds (no problems at all just hiking in them, they felt great when walking) but running on them was tough...

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

Seems like a lot of people like Merrells... they've got an interesting "barefoot" style shoe coming out in 2011: http://www.runningandrambling.com/2010/06/merrell-goes-barefoot.html So does New Balance: http://www.runningandrambling.com/2010/07/special-agent-minimus.html That's also a cool...

Stupid Scree Wall on Mt. Bond

They have those ropes on Katahdin as well. They look a little dumb but they seem at least somewhat effective. I think a path with ropes or rocks plus a small sign saying, "Stay off alpine vegetation" is the best you can get because it allows passage (unlike the scree wall) but manages the area...

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

Slightly off topic -- ever try walking on wet slabs of rock completely barefoot? Traction is unreal compared to even Inov-8's. This is probably individual to individual. I've put ~400 fairly aggressive miles on my Roclite 295's -- all trails, no roads and they look pretty much new. They'll last...

What's on your feet? (Three-season hiking footwear)

I never use gaiters. Personal preference, I guess. Years / miles? I usually get 3+ seasons out of a trail runner. The Sasquatch will usually, if lucky, get 3+ weeks. :p The VFF bottoms seem virtually indestructible. From what I have read and can tell, they typically fail in the uppers before the...
