Old ADK 46er looking to try the White Mountains

It hasn't been mentioned, perhaps because it's so obvious, but you do want to do that hike on a good day with good visibility. Obviously, why take one of the most beautiful hikes on a poor visibility day, but also when in near zero visibility, finding the entrance into the woods on Falling...

Fiva Accident -- A Good Read

I ordered the book, it arrived. I read a couple of pages then couldn't set it down. I was locked in. It's probably a good thing that every book I come across is not like this one or I probably wouldn't get anything else done. Highly recommended.

GPS Dog Trackers -- does anyone have any experience with them??

I've looked into the Garmin type devices for my Welsh Terriers but never made the purchase. I have seen Garmin in action from both ends and can testify that they work quite well. Down here in Georgia and NC I've encountered bear/boar hunters. They're always more than willing to show you their...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Actually, the whole point of the non replaceable batteries is that they can be relied on in an emergency. The batteries can be checked before a hike and you are supposed to do a monthly check. It's one thing to replace batteries when all is going well and quite another to try do it in a dire...

    Saying goodbye to an old friend...Terra T Traildog Oct 13 2003-November 15 2016

I remember well the encounter on Pico. It was the moment that Duffy and I finished the 100 highest. Here is the picture you took of us at that time.

    Saying goodbye to an old friend...Terra T Traildog Oct 13 2003-November 15 2016

I remember Terra well. From our first meeting in the col between the Kinsmans along with Orca to the heights of Carrigan to the Flags on the 48 on Isolation. She ran with the wind, worked with a purpose--keeping her flock together, never taking her eyes off her mistress looking for the...

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

One further thought When NOAA receives the distress message from ResQLink NOAA will contact a previously registered person to inform them of the distress call and to find out what information they might have concerning your outing.

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

My ACR ResQLink+ PLB is 1.6 X 1.9 X 4.5. It weighs 5.4 oz. The batteries are good for five years including monthly testing of the circuit and yearly of the Sat. reception. The only extra cost is battery replacement which right now is about $130. I figure that the cost is roughly $50 a year...
