Will you go gentle into that good hiking night

This past year I was heading up Albert Mt. a 5k on the AT in NC when I came across a gentleman hiking solo up the peak. He wasn't going to break any speed records but he was moving right along. We got to talking and he told me he was 85 and that all his friends were in a nursing home and as he...

    Winter Boot Question

I have the Cabella Avalanche boots and have been very pleased with them. I have used them in -10 F and my feet have always been warm and dry. They are very rugged and have held up well with snowshoes and microspikes. The price is hard to beat especially if you can get them during one of the...

    Winter training

It's my opinion that these days, hiking "solo" in the Whites, even in the winter, is a bit of a misnomer. That is, if you hike on Sat. or Sun. and do one of the "48" you might arrive at the trailhead alone but you will not be alone out on the trail. For instance, if you hike Pierce from...

    Karl Meltzer AT Record 2016

I think Lauky and I may have met Meltzer when he made his 2008 attempt. We were near Middle Carter doing a Carter's loop heading south bound on the AT when a runner came by. He had only a very small pack or hydration pack I forget now which it was. He paused briefly to say high and mentioned...

    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

Pepper along with his faithful companion John Sobetzer just keep rolling along. Pepper was to my knowledge the first dog to finish the grid then the first redliner. He now to my knowledge is the first dog to finish the 1k 4k. That is, Pepper has climbed 1000 four thousand footers. They may...

Let's see your alcohol stove kits!

Here are some photos of my Esbit stove with heat exchanger. It is extremely compact when packed up and will boil one cup of water in two minutes. I've used it for a couple of years and have been extremely happy with it.

North, Middle, South Carter - NH

Interesting pictures. They're obviously not the ones I photographed. I was told when the signs came down that the Forest Service had decided not to have signs in places where there were no trail junctions. I was last through there, before moving south, in 2012 and I don't remember seeing...

North, Middle, South Carter - NH

It's interesting that you ask about the pictures. I took these pictures on 10/04/08. I was doing the Carter loop with Lauky. We were on our way down from South Carter towards Zeta Pass when we met the young ranger coming up to take down the signs. The pictures I took are probably the last...

    Pokemon Go - hiking?

Pokemon Go in the Whites? If you're going to be watching a screen rather than where you place your feet...I'd say that would give you at best five minutes of exercise before you're flat on your face. Good luck. :)

First trip to Catskills-Suggestions on a hike

At this point I'm lucky I remember anything. :) But to have retained that impression of great views after all these years it must have been something worthwhile. I just tried googling it and it would seem to be what you speak of. http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/NSL-north.html

    Winter nh 48 canine finishers

Thanks, Tim. That was a slap on the head moment. Of course Kali also finished the grid. Sorry about that Heather and Kali. I've made the corrections above.
