    Recent Rescue on Washington

I think there is a big difference between offering or not offering unasked for advice, there is obviously a large gray area here, and not helping out someone who is lost or injured or hypothermic or stuck in the dark without a light or lamp or refusing to help someone who is asking for help in...

MSR model of the year - No more Evo or Pros

Years back my wife gave me a set of Yukon Charlies and said I'm giving you these so you can walk back in the woods with them and won't have to go winter hiking. That was the beginning of my winter hiking. :) I hiked a lot of peaks with them. I wore out the aluminum crampons and called and they...

    Recent Rescue on Washington

In the "For what it's worth" department, France does have a law dating back to Napoleon whereby you can be charged for a "manque d'aider une personne en danger", failure to help a person in danger. I know it doesn't apply in this country but it does show that over the years it is something that...

High Point Trip - 8 States and ...

Brasstown Bald is about 30 miles from our place. If you went through Blairsville you were 10 miles from us. In fact if you took 19/129 between Blairsville and Murphy NC you came withing 5 miles of our place. Of the highpoints you mentioned I like VA the best because of the extended tree free...

    Lauky's last hike

It was Tues. Sept. 15. We were visiting in Maine for a very short time. I had two days to hike. That Tues. I headed up to Crawford Notch and the Cog to do Washington. It was a beautiful day but up in the notch the wind was blowing very hard so I stopped in the AMC center to check out the...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

The title of the thread seems to ask if you can hike long term without being goal oriented, and the body of the thread seems to ask if you can hike long term and enjoy it if you are goal oriented. Obviously the answer to both questions is yes. The last few years we were in New England Lauky...

Walk in the Woods - the movie

I just got back from seeing the film. I thought it was one of the funniest films I've seen. The theater was rocking with laughter through the whole film. You have to take it for what it is, a comedy with the AT as a backdrop. There are though some great scenic shots. Again I thought the two...

    Lauky's last hike

Wow, 20 years, it must have felt great to finish. Glad we could have a part in it. You need to post in this link: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?56726-LKT-Longest-Known-Time, you're not the winner, but you must at least get honorable mention. :)

    Lauky's last hike

It was fun meeting so many people on the trails who recognized Lauky, that is if they weren't asking us if we were Tom and Atticus. :) Aska, as you can make out in the picture below also wears a bandana but so far no patches.

    Lauky's last hike

Thanks for your kind words. Life goes on and Aska and I have been out quite a bit. I haven't posted the hikes here as this is more a New England website and our hikes have been in North Carolina and Georgia but we do post on Facebook. Here are a couple of pictures. The first was on an...

    Decisions: Isolation or N. Tripyramid

There's one other factor involved here also. From the point where Pine Bend Brook really starts to climb until the junction with Scaur Ridge the trail is very bony which doesn't hinder that much going up but I found it very tedious going down under summer conditions, while the Livermore and...

    Decisions: Isolation or N. Tripyramid

VFTT has always been a hiker friendly site with a free exchange of thoughts, ideas, knowledge and experiences. The genius of a forum like this when it comes to trails is that in addition to checking the trail guides you can ask specific questions and get first hand beta from those who have...

    Decisions: Isolation or N. Tripyramid

The easiest approach and with no water crossings to deal with is from the other side taking the Livermore and Scaur Ridge trails reaching the Pine Bend Brook trail up on the ridge.
