    What would this be?

Not sure where to post this but seeing as the pic was taken on Marcy posting it here. What is the dark triangle in the left background? Btw, the pink glow is something called Belt of Venus. Never heard of it til today. I tried to post the image itself but no go so here's a link.

    Toughest 3000'ers in ADKs?

I did McDonnel from Skylight on 6 feet of good crust on a sunny April day and it was wonderful! (Even exited up the Redfield slide.) Hardest whack I think I ever did was take a direct line from the top of Calamity to the top of Adams. Averill South was easy from the Standish Road. The North...

    Thoughts on Energy Gel's

Bringing the fitness level of the hiker into this discussion is right on. Issues of cramping and bonking etc. are often erroneously attributed to fueling, electrolyte, and hydration issues when in actual fact it's just fitness. And as we all know, you can't buy fitness, nor can you put it in a...

    Thoughts on Energy Gel's

I think most of us have fairly similar nutritional requirements given that we are all derived from the "bottleneck population" when humanity was reduced to very small numbers. What else is there besides protein, fat and sugar plus a handfull of vitamins and minerals? Most hiking is done at low...

    Knob Lock Mountain Bushwhack

Nice trip! Great little mountain huh? You went up the way I did each of the 2 times I did it and you get lots of open exposed rock to stroll along. The first time I kept saying to myself, "I can bring my wife here" and sure enough she loved it. (I slowly collect a mental list of bushwhacks...

    Bushwhacking trailess peaks

Sorry for confusion, I wasn't referring to your post above, was pointing finger at myself and a couple other guys. :D

    Bushwhacking trailess peaks

We're pretty much ignoring the OP. If you already have a GPS and have figured out how to make the computer, the mapping and the data manipulation all work together then you can surely download (from Wikiloc or everytrail) existing tracklogs for every peak you need into Basecamp and then load...

    Bushwhacking trailess peaks

I used to carry my GPS in the bottom of my pack on whacks, just in case, but then I found that without the GPS I was in a more aware state of mind. Finally, I bought an altimeter, and using it with the map it's pretty much like having a gps. If I'm going to attempt following an unmarked trail...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

I read the question carefully and then I read the entire thread and the first response that came into my head was, what difference can it possibly make? (my tone here is friendly) Each person hikes for their own personal reason and the role that lists play is a bit different for each one...

    Lost GPS Mt. Tremont

Lost GPS (Garmin 62S) between Tremont and Owl's Cliff. Two-three weeks ago. If you found it contact me at Neilluck "at" videotron.ca Thanks!

    Bushwacking Tips?

I hate bushwhacking with poles although in open woods they can be beneficial but you can just grab a stick and dump it later. Poles can be dismantled (shorter than telescoping) and stored inside the pack. I just bought a pair of ultra trekking Z-poles and they are even easier to stow...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Tom, similar topology to the intestines, are the trails inside or outside looking into the wilderness?

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

On a forum I can pick and choose among what's available including when, where and with who I come into contact. I can turn off the speakers too! My wife doesn't mind crowds one bit but I prefer not encountering them when I'm hiking, fully cognizant that I'm a part of that crowd. It doesn't...

    Lost Pond Peak - 20 July 2014

LPP is one of my favorites. Your exit route sounds very interesting. I had heard of people trying to whack directly from Street to LPP (rather than making a short westward deviation first) and experiencing bad luck and trouble most of the way down to the drainage.

Baxter State Park Rescue (or lack thereof)

Based on the language of the reporter one can ask if he/she asked a few leading questions or established a certain tone to the interview. Angry Mom talking to the reporter probably has no idea of the information in peakbagger's post. We could go on about carrying a light (or two, or three...

Baxter State Park Rescue (or lack thereof)

My feelings are a little mixed regarding the rangers "sending" (I doubt they actually "sent" him) a probably tired young man up the trail alone in the dark to search for his 75 year old grandfather. (he was under 18 but they didn't know that until later, which may have been a major oops moment...

12th Annual Adirondack BBQ and Gathering, Same Party, New Place!!!

It's in the Croghan tract easement and AFAIK there are no PP issues. There are all sorts of gravel roads in that area and one goes right by Bald Mtn. It is north of Long Pond (Oswegathchie Camp is on the N end of Long Pond). This map shows the tract but doesn't show the good road that leads...

12th Annual Adirondack BBQ and Gathering, Same Party, New Place!!!

There is a Bald Mtn near Croghan that used to have a fire tower. I was up it last summer. What would you like to know?

60% Of NH Yearling Moose Population Dying

When a breeding population's range contracts I'm assuming it isn't due to members migrating towards the center. I would think it means that at the shrinking edges there is an increase in the death rate of juveniles. If you look at a map of the range of moose in North America you can see that...

    Camera Suggestions

I have a Canon G10, which is a high-end P&S. It takes great pictures for a P&S but is bulky and heavy. So, for a specific project this winter I purchased a $90 Canon from Amazon that slides in and out of a pocket and operates on full automatic with mitts on (I eschewed a case for speed and...
