Ed Hawkins finishes the Grid for 6th time!

Wow. And West Bond is always a fine hike. For those who need to know, 48*12*6 = 3456. That doesn't count the partial 7th grid, 8th grid, 3000-footers, hometown trails, vacation peaks, ... Ed, you da man! Got a frequent buyer account at Merrell?

    Hair ice

I've often seen needle ice (which I called extruded ice, until today). Here's a hairy example on the Tully Trail last New Year's Day. If I ever saw hair ice, I'd surely photograph it. From the same hike is something I call contour ice, because it looks like a contour map, perhaps due to repeated...

Owl house on O'Brien property, Westford MA. Built by a local Girl Scout troop on property for which the town recently purchased a conservation restriction. Think globally, act locally!

Fletcher's Cascades At the end of a 1.2 mile spur from Drakes Brook Trail is Fletcher's Cascades, a tiered waterfall atop a long, smooth cascade.

Sandwich Dome via Sandwich and Drakes

Choices, choices. Hike Saturday in the 30s with a ceiling supposedly at 4200', or Sunday in the 20s with clear skies. I don't like cold, so Saturday it is. Up Sandwich Mtn Trail, visit Jennings Peak, on to Sandwich Dome, down Drakes Brook Trail, back up the other side to Fletcher's Cascades. A...

    Mont Mégantic, Québec- 11/8/2015

Très belle. The summit hasn't changed since the 90s (?) when I drove up it. One could enter l'Observatoire then. Your view was much better than mine. There's lots to explore in Canada! And your knowledge of French will serve you well in the boonies of Québec.

    "Spirit of N.H. Awards Program".

I've often thought the hoopla over FKTs should be replaced with equal fervor over MKHs, Most Known Hours of trail maintenance.

I've been to high points in NC (drive), WV (drive) , and TN (hike) on separate trips, so your 8x trip is impressive. Linking it with brews makes it more so. Well done!

    Carter Notch Caves and Cliffs

Kids in a candy store. One of the most heart-warming stories I've read here. I bet your brother shows as much passion toward farming as he does toward exploring the nooks and crannies of the Whites.

Best peak to end 4000 footer list in NH?

From one who's been to the summit twice, but never been to the summit, these directions resonate. As to the best peak to finish, the 48th is the best! And anti-climactic. If it's easy, invite friends. If not, take a selfie and call someone if your cell phone works there!
