Black fly reports for your area?

Mixed results on Saturday, June 7. Perhaps a late start (10:30) and relatively high elevation (2100' at Kanc's hairpin) helped, but I noticed zero bugs until Sawyer Pond at 3:00. Then I was a marked man and fought black flies the rest of the way. Still itchy after three days. -Rich

Black Fly Schedule in the Whites

I'm with HH1. I've heard the season is Memorial Day to Independence Day, basically June with tails into May and July. Camping at Nancy Pond in mid-June 2009, cooking dinner was torture. The moment the stove was off, I retreated to the tent to eat. And then spent many minutes swatting them from...

What is this mountain seen from I-93N?

Does it look like a small pyramid? I believe that would be Liberty. Moosilauke, Cannon, Liberty and Lafayette are all visible long before "entering White Mountain Region". Try entering latitude 43.637535 N longitude 71.649399 W in heywhatsthat.com. The Visibility Cloak (viewshed) highlights...

    King Ravine

+1 KRT is definitely one of the most spectacular trails in the Whites. Past the Subway, you're climbing rapidly above treeline, and every time you stop to rest, you turn around and the view is so much better. The statistics say it's steep and strenuous, and you'll use your hands a lot. But I...

Views from Another Top - How Far Can You See from Atop Boston Skyscrapers?

heywhatsthat.com is a neat tool for exploring these questions. You can create your own 360-degree profile from any location and elevation, or in this case, find one already created for the Prudential tower. Then you can zoom to another point, like Mt Washington, and view the linear profile in...

Ranking the NH 4Ks by other 4Ks that are visible

My Scudder's is not the best for answering this question. The 1995 edition identifies only 34 from Carrigain by name: Hancock Moosilauke Flume SKinsman Liberty NKinsman Lincoln OwlsHead Lafayette Bondcliff Garfield WBond Bond STwin NTwin Zealand Hale Cabot Field Willey Jefferson Eisenhower...

    NH 4k song

lyrics A great song. Thanks for bringing it up. Well, I’ve been down every trail. And I never took the cog rail. I climbed, I climbed every mountain. I walked past every cairn, And I sure do miss the Old Man. I climbed, I climbed every mountain. Isolation, Waumbek, Whiteface, Galehead...

    Milky Way from Artists Bluff

Many of you have shown an interest in astronomy. Even if you haven't, this image has a definite wow factor. Astrophotographer Christopher Georgia captured a panorama of the Milky Way as seen from Artists Bluff on July 13. I bet many of you with DSLRs could duplicate his work...

    Terrifying Madison Gulf

Not so terrifying for me, either. I ascended Madison Gulf on 8/11 and thoroughly enjoyed it. At 6', only two pitches near the beginning of the headwall required using a knee to climb the ledges. There were no no-fall zones. It definitely required use of hands, and the going was necessarily slow...

Adams 5 via Great Gulf, Six Husbands, Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Osgood

Hi, Tim. It was great meeting you early in the hike. Your pictures are terrific; I should stop more often to look at the streams and the flora. Like you, I'm now hooked on the Great Gulf. Rich

Madison via Great Gulf, Madison Gulf, Parapet, Osgood 8/11/2013

Trail conditions Great Gulf: some muddy sections, no big deal Madison Gulf: the headwall was the best part! very little surface water 48 hours after the rain. A few difficult sections but my 6' frame handled it well. At the top I met a hiker bailing on a Presi traverse. I tried to steer him...
