    The carbon footprint of hikers

Hee... while cleaning out my mom's house this weekend I found a photo album with pics from the early 80's of mostly mom and me hiking in NH. In a lot of them - even in winter - I was wearing <gasp> jeans! Some artificial fibers are a great boon, but there is nothing like cotton and wool to...

Thanks Brian, I was about to point that out.

    Forest Fires in New England

A few years ago there was a burned area in a place where I go dog walking regularly. It was fascinating to watch the new growth come in.

Hot and Buggy Fun on the Mass AT

I'm beginning to wonder - is this a hiking board, or a board for MA volunteer fire fighters?

Questions about B.P.A. and Nalgene bottles

That's where I stand with it. I used to live on a pond. Each spring I'd see warning signs go up that pregnant women should not eat more than 3 fish from the pond due to mercury contamination. Well... if pregnant women shouldn't eat it, should anyone, really? Did I really want to continue...

Need suggestions for overnight hike w/in 2 hours of URI

I haven't walked either, but might there be something along the Seth Warner trail (SE MA) or the North South (RI) trail?

    Garmin 60CSx - disappointed

Thank you for your timely post. I'm currently vacillating between the Garmin 60CSx and the Earthmate DeLorme PN-20. In looking at specs, the two seem a lot a like. In looking at the maps, I noticed the same thing. It's a big factor in favor of the PN-20 (1:24,000 USGS quads of the entire...

    Dividend time - etrex H ?

Thanks for your help and clarification. We'd wondered if part of the increased price was better construction and/or components. I see that an external antenna is available, both for auto and trail use. Have you had a need for either of them?

    Dividend time - etrex H ?

I come back to these three models as well: Garmin 60CSx $428 eTrex Vista HCx $321 eTrex Legend HCx $267 From what I can see in comparing the units on their site, there is little difference between them. The 60CSx differs from the Vista in that it is a bit heavier, the screen is a little...

    Stratton Pond Trail Access Road?

Arlington/Westwardsboro Road aka Kelley Stand Road is plowed west from route 100 as far as the AT/LT Trailhead. The Stratton Pond TH is another mile beyond that. It's packed out by snowmobile travel, but you've got to be careful if they're around. Alternatively, you could turn north onto the...

Another missing hiker FOUND in Franconia Notch

You can't always believe everything you read in the news. A friend of mine who lost his barn in a fire was reported as having had 3 cows burned to death. He's never had cows on the property. Granted, it might be true, but I wonder if they meant something like his snowshoes weren't on.

    Boiler plate

We had some trouble in western MA today. We wore snowshoes not for the float but for traction. Even so, we were sliding around on the thick ice crust in steep areas.

    Lost hikers on Franconia Ridge

Charge everyone for rescue. Along with the self-service pay-to-park kiosks, introduce trip insurance vouchers (or, like the WMNF parking stickers, have the ability to pay for a whole season). Anyone who pays for a voucher won't get charged, regardless of circumstances. Anyone who doesn't...

    Snowshoe advice

I just bought a pair of women's MSR Lightning Ascents. In the past I've also had Atlas & Tubbs, as well as wooden. So far, the MSR's are my favorite. I've used them only on dog walking, they haven't seen the mountains yet. I chose these for several reasons: 1. No cloth in bindings (the...

    Quabbin reservoir

Yah, their rules seem very strange to me - no dogs, mountain biking okay (higher impact), while XC skiing (lower impact) is not, motor boats are okay while kayaks are not.

    Quabbin reservoir

Hikrgrl - We should get together sometime, we're close to the area too, along with another VFTT dog owner I can think of in the area - Smitty & Mika. There's lots of great other dogs-allowed places to explore. As for Quabbin - I'm sorry I can't help beyond what's already been shared here. I...
