    Hump Day

This really highlights for me the never-ending strangeness of human ambitions. And the pictures of this endeavor bring that point home even more. Odd, is all I can say. :)

Adirondack hiker looking for VT or NH day hike trail

Moosilauke is not near The Alchemist. ;)

Adirondack hiker looking for VT or NH day hike trail

While Ascutney is a relatively close and decent suggestion...for me it never really falls into any kind of "favorite" hike category. If you're going to take the time to hike and you're not often in VT, I'd take the time to visit Camel's Hump or Mansfield. Or up to the Worcester Range near...

    Pisgah in jeopardy

Christa, Thanks for pointing out that it's a bigger issue than just Pisgah. I didn't mean to overlook that aspect intentionally. Due to where I live and that I have spent a lot of time at Pisgah, it has a very special place in my heart. When I saw the article in the Brattleboro Reformer it...

    Pisgah in jeopardy

I just read this article about proposed decommisioning of Pisgah State Park as part of a 10 year plan for NH Parks and Recreation. I wanted to share this information with the hope that the more people who chime in it will show the Parks Division the full value of Pisgah. Pisgah is a great...

We had to put Genie down today

Pat and Audrey, How wonderful that you got to share life for a while with a beautiful, fun, lovable, furry hiking companion who endeared herself to so many people. How sad and painful it is that sharing life, love and companionship with another creature (human or otherwise) is far, far too...

    Monclair Glen Lodge - VT

I called GMC today but no one returned my call. The signs last week said Montclair Glen was planned to be functional by Memorial Weekend. Anyone know for sure if the reconstruction is finished?

    Olympic Peninsula in August

Ozette Triangle If there's anyway you can manage to do an overnight on very easy, flat terrain with a total distance of 9 miles (yes, you could do it in a day, but you shouldn't rush it) you should check out the Ozette Triangle loop. Camp on the beach. Awesome beach combing, great sea stacks...

This was a lot better than reading the cereal box again while I ate my breakfast! Thanks nartreb! Jen

    Cool Nature Guide from GMC

As a thank-you for a recent donation to GMC I received their new publication entitled Nature Guide to Vermont's Long Trail: A Quick Reference for Hikers written by Lexi Shear. I have not read all of it yet, but so far it seems worthy of a mention on this forum. It has a little bit of everything...

    Marmot Precip durability?

You said it yourself...if what you had worked and you didn't care when it wore out why not just buy the same thing again. Use the cash you save to buy a few new books or some new music or some beer or wine, or hell, just don't spend it! I have a Red Ledge something or other that I bought for $50...

    Need lightweight one-person tent advice

Big Agnes Seedhouse I got the Seedhouse SL 2 a couple years ago from Campmor and I love it. I use it occasionally as a two person tent and it's of course, a tight fit, but do-able. As a one person it's da bomb! It sets up and takes down in a snap and it's free-standing. I know a few others who...

    AT archaeology, and vernal pools.

Wow, Jason! Thanks for that great set of pictures. So fun to poke around the woods. I haven't been out since before the end of winter due to other priorities, but you've inspired me! Thanks. Jen

    Beaver, or Muskrat?

I vote muskrat too for all the reasons nartreb suggests. Doug Paul...you really see a flat tail clearly, identifiably in that first picture? I can't seem to make that out. I can't conclusively identify any particular type of tail from that picture.

    Spring Fling

Thanks UFC for hosting a bunch of kooks. Hikers and non-hikers alike! It was great to meet and talk to a bunch of folks I'd never met before. Fun dancing and listening to the band. Mardi's version of Tupelo Honey was still in my head this morning. Hope there will be other opportunities to hear...

Sweet! Thanks Steve. Got the last batch of pumpkin whoopie pies coming out of the oven as I type. So, make sure you leave a little room for more food! We'll be around later. Jen

    Spring Fling (Gathering) - Melting Snow 101 - 3.20.09-3.22.09

Last minute question if anyone at the Cave is paying attention Hey SK or Gris, If I'm going to play along at all this evening (I mean, when ), should I bring a mic or do you have one that can be plugged into an amp and is there amp space I could use for that? I don't have any...

Car broken into at Ferncroft lot

Yes this sucks, but... Why on earth would you leave your wallet with $400 cash in the car? Granted, I have no idea how heavy that much money is since I've never had that much cash on me at one time, so maybe it would be a nuisance to carry on a day hike. ;) Is there ever a good reason to...

    Mt. Abraham via Battell Trail

Date Hiked: 3.14.09 Trail Conditions: Hard packed, easy hiking, bare boot-able, although I wore microspikes the whole way and Blythe wore her MSRs near the top and all the way down for traction. Warm sun in the afternoon made snow a more slippery and soft than when we set out. No blow downs...
