A Year in the Life of Bird and Head...

Ah...the Green Mountains looking well...green! Enjoyed looking at the Green Mtns without the snow. Almost forgot how green they can be. F'only there weren't the bugs. :-)

What happens when you try to hike a 4000-footer and get, um, a little turned around?

Only You Ah Seema. Only you would "accidentally" bushwhack up a NEHH in the winter with huge packs. You're so cute. Nice cover on the "I'm not doing the winter NEHH peak-bagging thing", BTW! Glad you guys got out and had an adventure and that Brian got to do some off trail stuff.

    Spring Fling (Gathering) - Melting Snow 101 - 3.20.09-3.22.09

Just for clarification... Blues Harp = Harmonica played a certain way to give it that bluesy, sad sound. Blues Harp is not equal to the things that angels play in heaven. (unless it's the heaven where Little Walter is....that's a heaven I could be in to!) :D

    Spring Fling (Gathering) - Melting Snow 101 - 3.20.09-3.22.09

Well...let's set the bar nice and low. My blues harp playing is like kindergarten level as is my knowledge of musical keys and stuff. This is how it works in my house: "Chip, I've got my G harp (or C or D or A). Play something I can play along with blues style." And he does. And I just jam...

    Spring Fling (Gathering) - Melting Snow 101 - 3.20.09-3.22.09

Party in my 'hood With the party so close it's impossible to resist. Or maybe I'm just a crazy moth drawn to the fire of my demise. Maybe I can get Chip to be my DD. :D Any plans for open jamming time or do you have pretty set sets? One of these days I need to get my blues harp playing out of...

1/31/09 Beaver Brook Trail - Moosilauke

Date: Jan. 31, 2009 Trail Conditions: Well traveled after all that snow last week. Smooth sailing in a happy trough of snow the whole way to treeline. Someone else did the breaking and we were grateful! Special Equipment Required: On this particular day just snowshoes. Comments: On our way...

Evil Webmaster, I will not accept any friends! It is not in my cruel nature. I saw those threads and I'm intrigued by the film fest. If I say yes but then can't come up with anything worthy will you hate me? (more than you already do?) Actually I want Spongebob to come up with the idea and...

    Snowshoe hikes in Stowe, VT??

Yeah, I'd second that choice for bang and buck quality. If you want a longer day you could hit Mt. Hunger which is also in the day hikers guide. But that's probably more of a 3/4 day hike, not 1/2 day hike. Stowe Pinnacle is very, very popular. It will be well tracked and easy to follow. Maybe...

    SOLO-WFA Thank You

I'd been wanting to take this course for a long time so thank you for posting the opportunity here at VFTT. I don't know if they assigned you Aaron or if you "picked" him, but I thought he was an excellent instructor. I feel like I learned a ton of useful information and will be more prepared...

    after-hike hang-outs in the Whites

Wow...a 9/10 for Moat Mtn Brewery? I didn't know it was so well liked. I think I've been in there 3 times and will never willingly choose to return. I thought the service at the bar was rude and unhelpful, the beers quite lousy...too cold, no head on them at all, uninspiring taste. TVs on all...

Hikes near Bennington, VT-Best bang for your buck

Duh. How could I forget Haystack! Some friends and I had views all the way to a still snow capped Washington on a very clear day in May from Haystack. Or else, I was hallucinating with post Cinco de Mayo party hangover. hmmm... Also, there is a brew pub in Bennington (why can't I think of the...

Hikes near Bennington, VT-Best bang for your buck

If you have a Long Trail Day Hiker's guide you should be able to find some fun stuff. Near Manchester there is one that I think is called Owl's Head (I'm at work and don't have my guide with me today) that I haven't done, but looks like fun. Also over that way (near Manchester) is Mt. Aeolous...

Both these short hikes are now broken out to their tops. Have fun.

    Grivel G10 or Microspikes?

also you mentioned no longer having confidence in your Stabilicers when you're up on the roof. I don't think G10s would be a good idea on your roof. Microspikes would probably be okay. (be careful up there!)

    Gathering 10.0 - Canadian Rockies

wilderness hostels Hi, For anyone making this trip I suggest checking out one or more or the wilderness hostels in the Canadian National Parks out that way. We stayed at the Whiskey Jack Hostel right across from Takakaw falls and then we stayed at the Edith Cavell Hostel. There are a bunch of...

Nice or Necessary for winter hiking

Unfortunately for me hand and foot warmers are not emergency gear. They are most of the time gear. I kind of have a bum HVAC system or something in regards to my hands and feet. Not diagnosed but I suspect something like Reynaud's. Once my toes start to get chilled they seem to vasospasm and...

    Moosilauke -- Almost!!! December 6, 2008

Seems like half of the VFTT community was out on Moosilauke over the weekend. Nice to meet you Trish and Alex and glad we could return the lost snow shoe! I took a picture at the summit to get a shot of Franconia Ridge and there are two of you in this photo who I don't know, but I'm guessing...

    Vermont FR 10?

On the VT gazetteer it says FR 10 (near Little Rock Pond) is closed in winter. Does anyone know when it's actually closed and where they close it off? Thanks.

    "Essential" Adventure Documentaries?????

A handful of years ago, this guy, Rob Perkins, came to Brattleboro VT and did a presentation on paddling the Great, green, greasy, Limpopo river in Africa. He was a spellbinding story teller. I read his book Into the Great Solitude and enjoyed it about as much as an "adventure" story. I'm not...
