    winter parking Underhill SP, VT

Just there on 1/19 There was an area plowed out about 1 mile away from the entrance to Underhill. Didn't look like there was room for 20 cars this year. Some tough guy (or girl) drove a truck a little further on the unplowed portion of the road. Saw a bunch of people skiing on the CCC road...

    How old are you ?

Old enough to know better, but young enough to keep trying anyway. I think Trailbiscuit hit it right with his 20 somethings' conversation about going hiking. My first overnight backpack was like that, not in the mountains though. It was in a great ravine near Fredonia, NY-the name Arkwright...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

I know a fellow kidder when I see one PB! :D That "ngton" clue was great. Situated where it was near that road I was convinced we were looking at Rte. 9 near Bennington or Wilmington. That's when I went out to my car to get my Gazetteer. But Mt. Olga just didn't look quite the same there as...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

I know how to use topozone, kind of. I'm just a physical presence kind of person. I was doing a lot of scanning over larger distances for ideas, hints, clues. I can't do that as easily on topo zone as on a larger format piece of paper. Is there a better way to use it that I don't know about...

Don't leave home without your compass!

No, not string, are you crazy? ;) It's breadcrumbs that we'll need. I mean it worked for Hansel and Gretel, right? It did work didn't it? I never remember how things end.

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

It's funny how my VT gazetteer just doesn't quite look like these clips from the topo maps. Huh. And I hike with this thing!?! The topos just have too much detail, gets confusing. ;) Just kidding. It's all I've got here at work for quick perusal. I was knocking around that area for number 5...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

Finished figuring out #10 and have been working on #5. It looks so memorable, so obvious. There are such good clues in that topo crop-o.

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

This is so much more fun than doing work! Oh right. Duh. It's Spruce Peak, of which there are several in Vermont. Two on the 3k list. This one has no spruce on it. Also, Grass Peak is at the top center of your cropped map and I don't remember the name of that sub 3k in the upper left...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

Yes! Yes! That's the one. As I was walking upstairs last night that was the peak I kept thinking about and that I'd have to get out my quad map to double check. What a cool feeling to look at a bit of topo image and say, "Man, that looks so familiar. I know I've been there." Like recognizing a...

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

#6 is making me crazy Okay, it's too late. I have to go to bed, but I swear I've been on #6. It's shape is so familiar. It's making me crazy that I haven't figured it out yet. Crazy in a good way.

    Brand New VT Map Quiz!

Drats! Way too slow on this one I was all excited, got out my gazetteer, figured out #9 (my speed...fairly easy due to the Champlain hint and Long Lake off to the side) and then read the rest of the posts. Doh. I'm 5 hours behind the times. Thanks Pamola!

The passing of a member of our hiking family.................

There are no sufficient words. Only tears to dilute the immediate grief. Be gentle and patient with yourselves and with each other for as long as it takes to heal. Remember that everyone experiences grief differently. You and your family will be deeply in my heart and thoughts. Jennifer

What to do -- finding lost equipment on the trail

I would take the water bottle out with me and not worry about it too much. At that point it's kind of in the "garbage" territory. The sleeping bag, well...I would have worried that someone was expecting it to be there on returning from a day out hiking. I know, from your scenario that is...

    VT's Mother Myrick Mountain..MMM..good.

So you've tuned in to another exciting installment of my hiking adventures. You must be bored. Well, so am I, that's why I'm writing this report. I've been making lots of trips over toward Manchester and Dorset, VT lately. Today's destination was Mother Myrick Mountain. Most of the fun of this...

    Spruce Peak VT winter bushwack

Nah, I wasn't out on Sunday. My husband and I had ourselves (literally...just us)a little party on Saturday night at home and I was actually nursing a hangover on Sunday. What a sucker. I've been to Merck Forest before and it's a good place for a Sunday ramble.

    Spruce Peak VT winter bushwack

Spruce Peak VT winter-like bushwack Well, here's another exciting installment of Toe Cozy Hikes the VT 3k Peaks. This was a fun day playing in the snow. I had my USGS Quad out and ready to go and my pack by the door on Thursday evening. I couldn't wait to get outside this weekend. We (Chip &...

Mt. Aeolus formerly the mountain known as Green

I'm just doing my part to keep it quiet here for you until you retire. That's all. Glad to see you post and know that you didn't get washed away out there!

    Now I've seen everything!

Lucky, lucky you guys. That's so excellent. I think goats are so funny and to see them on the trail is pretty cool. I've only seen them going for walks on leashes in town occasionally. Boring compared to trail goats. Just like in the Rockies!!! :D Thanks for sharing.

Mt. Aeolus formerly the mountain known as Green

Yes, of course. In fact, I think the really cutting edge hiking, the place the cool people are going, where the hiking is at man...that's in Rhode Island or maybe Connecticut these days, right? That's where it's at. How's the hiking in Jersey? Which exit is it off of? :D

Mt. Aeolus formerly the mountain known as Green

No way man, Odd Mtn. is located within the Weirdos Wildlife Refuge and therefore protected by international Loser Laws in order to preserve the natural state of weirdos for perpetuity. (is the phrase "in perpetuity" or "for perpetuity"???) And besides that, Gap Kids wouldn't give me the...
