Best (mass produced)chocolate bar for hiking?

Other. Take Five bars. Not as dense as snickers, (which really do satisfy) but you get the combination of chocolate, pretzel, caramel and a little peanut butter. Salty, sweet, crunchy, chocolatey. I have met doubters as to this bar's goodness and once they tried it... converts.

Camping in VT near Burke - Umpire - East Haven 3k's ??

Hey John, thanks for this info. I have been wondering this about my fair state just recently but keep forgetting to make the call to ask the district rangers. That's cool to know.

    Belknap Range

I'm curious to know if anyone here has hiked these hills. I'm guessing these are more off the beaten path than even the NE 3k peaks, but I could be wrong. Belknap Range Checklist

    Signal (VT) 10/21

So what am I missing? From previous trip reports I gathered that you are chipping away at the 3k list in VT. Didn't you recently hike up Grass and Cold Hollow and the Worcester range? I know there are a million ways to skin the cat when it comes to lists (e.g. 14 highest peaks of maine thread)...

    Pants

Sorry, couldn't resist Well for starters, you could try not peeing in your pants during the cooler weather. If that doesn't work some Depends Undergarments should do the trick. Heeheehee...just kidding. :D

Tibetan prayer flags on summits -- yay or nay?

I think you should contact the GMC and voice your concerns. I'm sure you're not alone in thinking those prayer flags don't belong there. If people want to bring flags of any sort up to the tops of mountains that's fine with me, but take them with you when you go. Leaving that stuff up there is...

    altimeter advice

This Thommen talk has me intrigued. Perhaps I should have done more research before my purchase. Well...I bet what I have now won't be my only altimeter...just my first. See, I was satisfied with what I had until all you crazy people started putting other ideas into my head. Sheesh! ;)

    altimeter advice

One little opinion I'm sure there are many more experienced altimeter users than me. I just got mine in the spring. It is digital. It probably has more features than I care about. I don't use the chronometer or the alarm (it's way too quiet). But it's easy to use and it clips on and off of...

    Personal Locator Beacons

Oo oo! That sounds awesome! Where do I sign up? I'm looking for a career change...maybe I could work this into a new career...stunt driver extraordinaire. Pete, you always have such good ideas. As far as battery life is concerned, the specs on these things describe a 5 year battery life and...

    Personal Locator Beacons

Yeah, I read the old posts about the dude who activated the locator twice. And yes, my mom knows I'm a big girl, albee...you clearly are forgetting that age (or size as you suggest) is irrelevant in a worried parent scenario. ;) My mom imagines me either being attacked by crazy mean people in...

    Personal Locator Beacons

Well, I did a dumb thing. I told my mom about hiking off trail alone. She's never been real keen about any of my solo adventures in the woods (hiking, backpacking) but this really made her upset. She started talking about locator devices and that I should absolutely have one for that "what if"...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

Another first...a link to my pictures Sorry that I'm in some of these ruining the scenery. It's my very first webshots album. Now that I can do this, I may have to do a different trip report so I can show off my 3 week vacation to the Canadian Rockies, Washington and Oregon....that's a lot of...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

Thanks for the various ideas here about GPS vs. non-GPS. I'm definitely not knocking using a GPS. I could see how it might give you more sense of freedom to explore obscure nooks and crannies like Peakbagr described and not be so hyper aware all the time, which can get so fatiguing during a long...

South Mtn. Ludlow, VT 20 years in a tiny notebook

Dude, you saw my headnet? I knew I lost it on that whack someplace. I got that thing for christmas from my mother in law. Luckily, my husband got one too, so now I just use his. I'm surprised you could see it up there, it being camouflage and all. ;) Darn, you should have retrieved it for me...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

I got some self taken way too close up shots of me standing on top of the rickety metal structure on Dorset, a couple canisters, my stuffed moose mascot wearing a rusted out metal pitcher as a helmet, door knobs on trees. You know, normal stuff. Actually, I've never done that uploading thing to...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

Tomorrow...at work...me, my altimeter, my compass and a USGS topo of the Austine School in Brattleboro. I'll get the bearing to the bathroom and to the waiting room and back to my office. Even out to the parking lot at the end of the day. It's gonna be an exciting day at the office tomorrow...

West Dorset, VT: First Solo off trail

Well, I finally did it. Solo off trail hiking is one of those ideas that seems perfectly plausible to me in the daytime and then takes on a whole different dimension at night when I'm trying to fall asleep. That's when I think of only all the things that could go wrong. Number one: my clutzy...

South Mtn. Ludlow, VT 20 years in a tiny notebook

This wasn't any epic trip that I want to report about. South Mtn. Is a pretty easy short bushwack. But I really enjoyed seeing the date of May 2, 1987 when the current register was placed at the top of this hill. And the book is not even near full. Not a frequently visited place. But a hunter...

Thanks for that story, Puck. I will always think of it when I see these birds from now on. Cool. Pretty intense close up picture, Kevin!

Mt Abraham and Mt Ellen backpack?? (VT)

Yeah, what he said. I was gonna add that same thing, but couldn't for the life of me remember the "name" of the hut or any details other than it existed. If you go this weekend, don't forget it's peak foliage season, good weather, a long weekend and a really nice section of the LT. It'll likely...
