Free Screening of "The People's Forest" about the creation of the WMNF

I'm curious if anyone from the VFTT community is going to this. I'm going and would love to say hi to others who may be there. Shame the White Mountains Museum isn't open on Tuesdays, though. It would have been nice to spend an hour there before the screening.

    Worst bug encounters ever

This thread is making me itchy! I will be well-armed this weekend on the trails --- two words: Old Woodsman!!! That stuff will keep EVERYTHING including other humans away from me. :D

    spoor stumper

Sounds like an omnivore for sure, but could a bear actually crawl under the fence? Obviously depends on what they're eating, but could this be raccoon? Their scat can be quite large and the form you suggest is not out of the realm of possibility.

    2013 Spring Wildflower Thread

The trillium on steroids is way cool! As a herpetologist friend of mine likes to say "the critters don't read the ID guides", or in this case the plant didn't read it, apparently :D.

    2013 Spring Wildflower Thread

Thanks for posting the link Jason. Certainly knew about the mycorhizzal relationship in lady slippers and many other orchids but have never even heard of never mind seen, anything like that. Very cool!

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Maddy- Your kindness is SO appreciated. I was completely kidding, but am not terribly surprised by your offer, in hindsight. The size that you wear is way too big for me, unfortunately. When I have been able to wear men's boots (and that has been rare, given that my foot is overall narrow...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

TCD --- I think it's interesting that I have never considered hiking in trail runners previously. I never thought about it much but I guess I always felt that I would have better stability and be less prone to turning my ankles in a taller boot. I think it's a worth a shot given that some have...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Doug --- Guess this is just hard to explain, but while I might need new boots, it doesn't mean that I feel I have the money to not only buy new boots but to also get fitted for orthotics and the like. That isn't happening and my budget is limited by circumstance, unfortunately. Again...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Maddy --- Sorry for your fit problems, as well. Thanks for the info. Scarpas are out of my price range for the foreseeable future, unfortunately, unless someone wants to buy me a pair :D. PS --- What size do you wear??? Wondering if anything in your "bargain basement" might have my name on...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Breeze --- I actually wasn't talking about the Keens re: prohibitive cost, but rather the Scarpas and La Sportivas that some prefer. I remember checking both out at some point when I was hiking a lot with someone who was primarily an ice climber because his preference was either of those...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Thanks for the tip about T of B, Doug. I had heard of it before, but have not used it. And just to assuage any concerns you may have about my intellectual capacity, I do NOT put tape directly on my heels, but on top of either moleskin or those big, ankle-sized latex-free bandages that I buy in...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

Some of these brands may be beyond my price point ;). But thanks, all, for all this great information and input. Salomons are a no-go for me --- they just don't work for my feet. Men's boots are absolutely a no-go because my entire foot is low volume with the exception of the toe-bed. It...

    Hiking Footwear "Issues"

:( So, I've always had problems with boot fit .... and unfortunately those problems are continuing. Recently did a sweet little hike in the Camden Hills (Thanks Mark!) and I could tell that my old boots were eating at least one of my heels. I've had this problem before, but not with these...

Ragged Mountain and Bald Mountain, Camden Hills during Memorial Day long weekend

This is not a fully fledged plan as yet, but I will be in Midcoast Maine over Memorial Day weekend and am hoping to hike a lot in the Camden Hills. If anyone is interested in joining me, I'd really like to get up Ragged and then over to Bald Mtn., but it would require a hiking partner and car...

    Kearsarge North- Pequwaket 12-15-12

This is one of my favorite hikes! It's a great workout, has great views and it it doesn't take long. The trail does get very icy (and remains so right through spring, often) when you hit the ledges, but it's still fun. Loved the picture of a smiling Emma --- it made me smile too :D.

    Hikes near Sandwich, MA?

I used to live and work in Sandwich for a time in my early 20s. Like Doug, I also LOVE the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail (it is absolutely magical) as well as the trail at Fort Hill site in Eastham and at the National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center there. If you go as far as Brewster the...

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

TCD --- That is quite a bit earlier in vintage than the Rush I listened to in High School .... but I'm glad you mentioned it, because I went back and took a listen, and now I'm quite sure that it will also be in my head in the near future :D. I listen to the Greatest Hits mp3 at the gym almost...
