Black Cap Mountain (North Conway) via Black Cap Trail: 06-April-2013

Considering the weather forecast for the upcoming days, it's doubtful that the snow will survive on Black Cap Mountain (North Conway, NH). But, on the day of my hike, there was plenty of white to be seen. Some consideration was given to doing a loop by hiking Hurricane Mountain Road on the...

Boy Mountain (near Jefferson, NH) via Boy Mountain Path (04-Apr-2013)

The trail was in great shape, thanks to the Carter-Bridgman family who maintain this trail and allow hikers access to it on their private land. It's always a bit uncomfortable to walk up their private driveway to access the trail, but apparently this family has no problem with it since they...

SE Corner of Presidential Dry River Wilderness via Bushwhack + Mt. Langdon Trail

This was a loop hike of about 7 miles in the southeast corner of the Presidential Range Dry River Wilderness. About half of this trek was a bushwhack, and the other half was on the Mt. Langdon Trail. The hike was done on 18-March-2013. Considering the significant snowfall since this hike...

    Mahoosuc Trail to Mount Hayes

Peakbagger makes some very good points in favor of the Centennial Trail. Perhaps, like many things, it comes down to a matter of personal preference. I've done winter hikes to Mt. Hayes via both the Mahoosuc Trail (from Rt. 16), and the Centennial Trail. I prefer the Mahoosuc route since it...

Mt. Monroe via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail + Crawford Path + Monroe Loop: 26-Feb-2013

Can't really add anything to Lefty's trail conditions report. I traveled the same trails on the same day and experienced the same conditions that he described (see link below). http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?48216-Monroe-via-Ammonusuc-Ravine-Crawford-Monroe-Loop-2-26-13 I'll just...

    Southwest Twin, N&S Twin, Galehead

Although it's unlikely that I'll ever attempt SW Twin, your report confirms my suspicions that a winter approach from the Twinway makes imminent sense! Great report, and thanks for posting!

Trailhead for Benton Trail via Tunnel Brook Road: 21-Feb-2013

This was a 5.4 mile (round-trip) XC-ski along Tunnel Brook Road. My sole destination was the trailhead for the Benton Trail. Primarily, this was for the pure pleasure of gliding on my skis through a remote corridor in the WMNF. Secondarily, I wanted to get a feel for conditions along the...

Eliza Brook Shelter via Reel Brook & Kinsman Ridge Trail: 18-Feb-2013

After having read Trail Runner's VFTT Trail Conditions report about the Reel Brook & Kinsman Ridge Trail, I decided to take advantage of the trail having been recently broken out. I'd never hiked this route under winter conditions, and this seemed like a great opportunity, and indeed it was...

    Pine Mtn Gorham NH

Thanks Peakbagger. Your response makes sense to me. You confirmed my gut instinct that even though the ponds and the spring just so happen to be in close proximity to each other, most likely they are separate entities with no direct connection. I suppose it could be argued that in a system...

    Pine Mtn Gorham NH

Very nice report with loads of interesting info! Regarding the Pine Mountain Trail that begins in Gorham, I hiked that trail a few summers ago. Interesting to see a few faded white blazes which I assume are leftovers from long-ago days when this was part of the AT corridor? Got one other...

Jericho Road (from road gate to trailhead for Rocky Branch Trail): 05-Feb-2013

This is probably common knowledge to most. But since it's new to me, maybe it will be new to a few others as well. Yesterday was the first time I've road-walked Jericho Road. All other visits to the south terminus of the Rocky Branch trail have been done during summertime conditions when the...

Loop Hike along Beaver Brook XC Ski Trails: 03-Feb-2013

Along US Rt. 3 (about 4 miles west of Twin Mountain) is the trailhead for the Beaver Brook XC Ski Trails. On 03-February, there definitely wasn't enough snow for skiing, and so I decided to do a 5.8 mile loop-hike via the trails named: Beaver Loop, Badger and Moose Watch. Winter is about...

Blueberry Mountain via Blueberry Mtn Trail (Long Pond Rd trailhead): 21-Jan-2013

On the day of my hike, you really could have done this entire trek without snowshoes. However, I wore them anyway since they provided a more stable platform on an uneven surface. Plus, I kept thinking that as soon as I stopped to remove them, then it wouldn't be long before I'd need them...

Jennings Peak via Sandwich Mountain Trail: 15-Jan-2013

The snow on the trail's treadway was well consolidated by previous hikers who had kindly used snowshoes to hike this trail. The recent January thaw had further hardened the treadway such that I was able to comfortably use Microspikes for the entire trek. I did have my snowshoes strapped to my...

Lookout Ledge (Crescent Range) via Grassy Lane; Pasture Path; Ledge Trail:10-Jan-2013

The only trail on my route that was unbroken was the short 0.1 mile Grassy Lane connector trail. All the trails were in good shape with no blowdowns at any point along the route. A few of the stream crossings on the Pasture Path require some skillful maneuvering to avoid getting your footwear...

Afternoon Delight - A Quickie On The Hump

Terrific photos, and I love the report's clever narrative. Your roadside photos of the Hump are striking! P.S. Thanks for the tip about the "Eye on the Sky" weather forecast.

Star King - like the good old days

Was up there in mid-December and also noticed the improved views from Starr King. My trek also included Mt. Waumbek. It seemed to me that some "view-enhancement" had also been done at the blowdown area that's located just a tad east of Waumbek's summit on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail. Yup, I agree!
