Mt. Pemigewasset via Mt. Pemigewasset Trail (+ bushwhack): 26-Dec-2012

At this time of year, it's not unusual for trail conditions to change rapidly. This is definitely the case for this trek! On 26-December, the trail conditions consisted of a mixture of light snow and sporadic ice from trailhead to summit. Only light traction (Microspikes) was needed. It's...

Mt. Waumbek via Starr King Trail (13-Dec-2012)

The lower part of the Starr King Trail had some muddy areas, much of which was frozen mud. Throughout the hike from start to finish, there were sporadic patches of ice. About midway up the trail on the approach to Starr-King, there was a light covering of snow on the trail. Along the ridge...

Mt. Israel via Wentworth Trail: 06-Dec-2012

The Wentworth Trail was in good shape. There were no significant blowdowns, and the trail was snow-free. There were some occasional icy patches, but with careful foot-placement, they could be navigated without the addition of foot traction. My BLOG has some photos taken during this trek.

Humphrey's Ledge via bushwhack from Moat Mountain Trail: 27-Nov-2012

A short bushwhack on public land was launched from the Moat Mountain Trail to a spot on Humphrey's Ledge in the North Conway area. There were open hardwoods for the entire trek, and no snow or ice was encountered along the route taken. (Did not go to the highest point. It wasn't on my agenda...

    Bartlett Haystack via Bushwhack: 19-Nov-2012

It had been 5 years (almost to the day) since I last visited Bartlett Haystack. Like all my previous treks to this destination, the bushwhack was launched from the south end of FR44 where it junctions with Bear Notch road at a point about 2 miles west of the Attitash trailhead leading to Table...

Middle and North Sugarloaf (Zealand) via Sugarloaf Trail: 15-Nov-2012

The Sugarloaf Trail was in good shape. There were some muddy spots, but on the day of this hike they were solidly frozen. There were some icy spots here and there, but nothing that would require even light foot traction. The ladder at the final approach to Middle Sugarloaf had only an...

Bald Cap Peak Ledges via PeabodyBrook Trail + BaldCap Peak Ledges Trail: 10-Nov-2012

In June of this year (2012), the Shelburne Trails Club opened a trail to the ledges on Bald Cap Peak. The corridor is about 0.4 mile long, and it runs from a point near the southwest end of Dream Lake to the ledges. The Peabody Brook Trail was in good condition. One blowdown that was blocking...

Cherry Mtn (Mt Martha + Owl's Head) via CherryMtn Trail + Martha's Mile: 06-Nov-2012

The Cherry Mountain Trail (from NH Rt. 115) to Mt. Martha was in great shape. No blowdowns, no mud, no significant water crossings. There was a light covering of snow starting at the trailhead. The snow-depth topped out at about 3-inches at the higher elevations. I used Microspikes for...

Mt. Tremont via Mt. Tremont Trail: 02-Nov-2012

Hiked my adopted Mt. Tremont Trail on 02-Nov-2012 to assess aftermath of "Super-Sandy Storm". Am happy to report that you are now free to roam on this trail!:) The few minor blowdowns that resulted from this storm have been removed. Some older blowdowns remain, but they are all very easy...

Maggie's Run Trail (new trail near Dry River Campground, Crawford Notch): 25 Oct 2012

The new Maggie's Run Trail was recently opened by Crawford Notch State Park staff. There is a 0.6 mile section that runs along the Saco River from a point near the Pleasant Valley Wayside area on Route 302 to a point opposite the picnic area at Dry River Campground. Blueberry Mountain (Evans Notch) via BickfordBrook & BlueberryRidge Trails: 23Oct2012 This hike only involved the lower 0.7 mile segment of the Bickford Brook Trail, which was in excellent condition. Aside from a few muddy spots, and a few wet slippery rock slabs, the Blueberry Ridge Trail...

Eagle Cliff (Squam Lake) via Eagle Cliff Trail: 17-Oct-2012

Although you can follow the Eagle Cliff Trail all the way to Red Hill, my modest goal for this particular day was only to go to Eagle Cliff. I had never been there, and so I was uncertain exactly what to expect. First of all, this trek took far less time than I had anticipated. After only...

Five Finger Point (Squam Lake) via Five Finger Point Trail: 17-Oct-2012

Starting from the small parking area on Pinehurst Road in Holderness, it's a short and pleasant hike to Five Finger Point peninsula. The Five Finger Point Trail was in good shape. Hiking in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire is always a pleasure, but I find it particularly nice during the...

Rumford Whitecap loop via Orange Trail and Yellow Trail (13-Oct-2012)

My friend Zman and I did a loop by ascending via the orange trail, and then descending via the yellow trail. The elevation gain for this hike was about 1,600 ft. There have been some relatively recent re-routes over the course of our loop, and so it's difficult to provide a precise mileage...

Dorothy Corey, red-lines the Whites Mountains

Thanks for posting this! For fear of understating all of her hiking accomplishments, I'll merely say that this is just one of her many completions. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can post all of Dorothy's other achievements. Congratulations Dorothy! Well done, as always!

First Presidential Traverse, Madison to Webster 9/14/12

Todd, you deserve each of the positive comments. It was a well-planned traverse and it was expertly implemented. Your cell phone photos don't need any apology. They are actually pretty darn good! After all, I don't think one of your objectives was to win a photo contest! And, I agree...

Loop (Great Gulf Trail; Osgood Trail; Osgood Cutoff Trail; Great Gulf Trail): 9/20/12

The above loop was done in conjunction with doing trail maintenance on the Osgood Cutoff Trail, plus the segment of the Osgood Trail that runs between the junction with the Great Gulf Trail and the Osgood Tentsite. And so, the two trails that were worked on are in good shape, or at least they...

Mt. Paugus via Kelley Trail; Lawrence Trail; Old Mast Road: (17-Sep-2012)

Each of the trails listed above were in good shape. There were no issues with blowdowns, mud, or water crossings. In addition to the trails listed above, I also hiked for about 0.2 mile on the Cabin Trail (from the junction with the Lawrence Trail). That segment of trail had a few minor...

The trek to the Baldpates involves a lovely segment of the Appalachian Trail, and the trail conditions were excellent for the entire distance. Photos from this trip are at my BLOG.
