Mt Crescent via Mt Crescent Trail and Crescent Ridge Trail: 23-Mar-2012

Other than a few widely scattered patches of snow near the top of Mt. Crescent, this hike was basically snow-free. The trails were in very good shape. There were just a couple of blowdowns that could easily be stepped-over. My BLOG has a few snapshots from this trek.

    Snow-free trails. Spring 2012 edition.

On 23-March, I hiked to Mt. Crescent via the Mt. Crescent and Crescent Ridge trails. Other than a few widely scattered patches of snow near the top of Mt. Crescent, this hike was basically snow-free.

Will the Dry River Trail be opened.

It's highly likely that there is more in-depth info available from other website links and/or the Forest Service, but below is one link that turned up with doing a quick search. http://www.nhpr.org/post/white-mountain-national-forest-gets-4-million-still-falls-short-irene-repairs

Iron Mountain Ledges via Bushwhack: 18-Mar-2012

I parked on Jericho Road at the point where the road becomes gated, and then bushwhacked northerly to reach my destination which were the ledges that are located on whatever you want to call it, i.e. Iron Mountain's south ridge, south spur, south arm, whatever! These ledges are NOT the same as...

South Moat via Moat Mountain Trail: 15-Mar-2012

Overall, the trail was in good condition. Near beginning of trail there is one large blowdown, but it's an easy walk-around. Trail conditions were extremely mixed. There were sections of trail that were completely free of snow and ice, whereas other segments were quite icy and Microspikes...

    Rules for photos with people?

Although copyright law is not the precise topic here, nonetheless the link below is perhaps (if nothing else) an interesting side-issue related to digital images. http://www.ehow.com/about_5048507_copyright-laws-images.html

    Thorn Mountain in Jackson

Joe, I see what you're seeing, i.e. the ledge + the trail on the west side of Thorn Mtn that begins off Thorn Hill Rd. But, that's about as far as I can take it. Besides the potential issue with private land, probably the other issue would be with parking. In the "for what it's worth"...

Doubleheads (Jackson) via Old Path; New Path; Doublehead Ski Trail: 11-Mar-2012

All trails were snow-covered with very few patches of bare ground. Previous hiker-traffic had consolidated the snow such that you could do the hike without snowshoes. Many hikers had done this which resulted in a choppy surface with some occasional postholes. Due to the warm temperature and...

Mt Hayes via Centennial Trail + Mahoosuc Trail (26-Feb-2012)

The entire length of the Centennial Trail was in great shape, as was the short 0.2 segment of the Mahoosuc Trail that I hiked to the summit of Mt. Hayes. There were no issues with blowdowns or water crossings. A large area for parking had been plowed at the intersection of North Road and...

Lens protection when lens cap removed

Thanks Tom and Nartreb for your responses! Nartreb, I loved your dpreview link, as well as the following line that you quoted from it. "Beginners continually ask whether they should buy and fit a UV filter. It's like they feel their iPhone needs a rubber skin or case." As you might suspect...

Lens protection when lens cap removed

Looked but unable to find a VFTT thread regarding the topic in title of this posting. 1) Is it better to rely solely on a lens hood to protect the camera lens from dings, etc when shooting photos; or is it better to rely on a UV lens filter to prevent damage? (Or, perhaps use both??) 2)...

Mt Carr via Carr Mountain Trail (western trailhead, Warren, NH): 19-Feb-2012

This hike was done on 19-Feb and so these trail conditions are a few days old. Nonetheless, it can be reported that the Mt Carr Trail was overall in good shape from its western trailhead (near Warren, NH) all the way to the summit. There were a few blowdowns, but all were easy to negotiate in...

Perhaps an Old Sawmill Near Southern End of Tunnel Brook Trail??

Roy: I think you're absolutely correct about the possibility that someone at the Glencliff Home's maintenance department would be a good source of info. Might pursue that angle! Andrew + Peakbagger: Thanks for info that you posted about Cascade Alpine Brook. And Andrew, I loved the Blog...

Thank you everyone for your replies . . . much appreciated! Peakbagger, I think you might have come up with the right answer. I'm posting 3 more photos shown below. PHOTO 1: This topo map has two things marked as follows: 1) A big red "X" is positioned about where I think I came across the...
