Perhaps an Old Sawmill Near Southern End of Tunnel Brook Trail??

During one of my recent meanderings, I came across the ruins shown in the photos below. I presume this was a sawmill at one time?? These remains are located near the southern terminus of the Tunnel Brook Trail but on the opposite side of the brook (east side). Just curious if anyone has any...

Mud Pond (Tunnel Brook) via Tunnel Brook Trail (southern end): 14-Feb-2012

Mud Pond was accessed via the southern end of the trail which begins in Glencliff, NH. However, the trailhead isn't safely accessible due to the intense logging operations that are now in progress on Long Pond Road. So, to reach the Tunnel Brook Trail, I parked on a widened area on the...

    Eweoooo! What was that smell???

Ellen, this is a point of controversy , but I've been told that during certain weather conditions, there is sometimes an odor emanating from the Bethlehem landfill which is located nearby on Trudeau Road. I've never experienced it, and so I cannot describe the odor. Just thought I'd offer that...

Mt Cabot (the one in Shelburne, NH) via Red Trail & Blue Trail: (8-Feb-2012)

Both the Red Trail and Blue Trail were in excellent shape! Conditions were such that snowshoes were appropriate for the entire hike. I began the hike from the Philbrook Farm Inn. The personnel at the Inn cheerfully accommodated my request to park at the far end of their lot. The Shelburne...

    Super-Pretty Wintry Welch and Dickey

Great report . . . you notice the little things that I tend to notice on a hike . . . even things like your own shadow! Plus, your photo perspectives are very well-chosen!

Cooley Hill via Jericho Rd Trail (+ side trip to Mud Pond): 05-Feb-2012

COOLEY HILL On the day of my hike, the Jericho Road Trail was in excellent condition. Snow depth was never more than a couple of inches. There was an underlayment of ice, and so Microspikes were used for the entire trek. The roadside parking area was unplowed, but it wasn't an issue since...

Shell Cascade (Waterville Valley) via FR 116 + bushwhack: 30-Jan-2012

There are no hiking trails that lead to Shell Cascade. And, from a very cursory search of a few editions of the White Mountain Guides (WMG) from the early 1900s, it appears that maybe there wasn't a trail even in that early timeframe. I did find a brief description of a path leading to Shell...

Getting towed near Mt. Tremont trailhead

Sorry that your friend's car got towed. That would be a very unhappy ending to any hike! The widened shoulder area on the north side of Rt 302 serves as a parking area for the Mt Tremont Trail. For at least the past several winters, that area has been unplowed. As Brian correctly states...

Mt Parker via Mt Langdon Trail and Mt Parker Trail (26-Jan-2012)

The trail conditions on 26-January were perfect for snowshoes from trailhead to summit. There were blowdowns all along the route, but all were easily negotiated. The first mile of the route (from the trailhead for the Mt. Langdon Trail to the boundary for the Presidential Range Dry River...

    Microspike loss saver.

Never had a problem with Microspikes becoming detached from my boot on a hike. But if (for whatever reason) this is an issue for someone, then I suppose a setup like shown below might at least prevent the loss of your Microspike should it become detached. I've never had the need to test this...

    Kearsarge North Loop?

This is a great loop! I've done it a couple of times by leaving the Kearsarge North Trail at around 0.4 mile from the trailhead and then headed easterly. Within 15-20 minutes of open-woods whacking you hit the Shingle Pond Trail. It's well defined all the way to the south end of Shingle...

Black Mountain (Benton, NH) via Black Mountain Trail: 19-Jan-2012

The trail was in great shape. There was only one blowdown which could easily be stepped over. The trail conditions from start to finish were perfect for Microspikes. There was an inch or two of snow on top of an underlayment of ice. Presumably no one has traveled this trail for awhile...

    Playing in the Ossipee's 1/15/11

Nicely done Joe! As you indicated in your report, and as verified in many of your photos, the Lakes Region Conservation Trust does a great job with their trail system.

    Must Be a Story Here?!

Hey Andrew . . . thanks for your comments. Hmmm! I wonder if the "hanging mirror" (plus the little side trail you mentioned) is something that was done after I'd finished my 2011 summer maintenance on Martha's Mile. Regardless, this winter-sighting was the first time I'd seen it. And yes...

    Must Be a Story Here?!

@Tim: Thanks for the link to my Blog . . . very kind of you! @ KRobi: Yes, the rope appeared to be looped around the tree limb, rather than tied to it. @ColdRiverRun: The "bear bag" theory seems to be a likely scenario. Don't know why the person didn't retrieve the mirror. Not knowing...
