Freedom of the New England Hills

You also have to be willing to leave your family / loved ones for significant chunks of time. I hate to point out the elephant in the room, but this hobby of ours can be an extremely selfish one. Most (all?) hobbies are by their very nature selfish. However if your hobby is piano, or reading...

    Bondcliff on a windless day

Out-and-back to Bondcliff from a bathroom-less, parking-fee-less Lincoln Woods. Met a couple of criminals who had spent the night at Guyot campsite, showing complete lack of respect for the shutdown. I was about to give them a reprimand they wouldn't soon forget, but then I remembered I simply...

    I love ny!

There are other hiking forums on the web? I don't do acid, but Summer005 has me reconsidering. Summer 038 is beautiful.

job posting for a Camping Speciliast

Yeah, nothing says "fun outdoors job" quite like an office building on Conn Ave in DC. On the other hand, they do offer "direct deposit" as one of their benefits.....gotta admit, tough to pass that up.

Pemi Loop (clockwise) on a bluebird day - 2013-Sep-19

The definition of a bluebird day is any nice day when someone else is hiking and you're at work.

    Kelty Backpacks

I'd appreciate it if you could explain why you didn't like the Kelty child carrier. I'm looking into one of these, and a first-hand review would be great. You won't be prosecuted for thread-drift, as the title of the thread is "Kelty Backpacks", so you're safe. Thanks.

Baxter State Park backpack: Russell Pond/Pogy Pond/Davis Pond, 9/5-9/8

Always like your trip reports, especially for the variety of photographs. That 3rd photo is so "blaze". Very creative, very cool.

Climbing Marcy's East Face: A Circumnavigation with an Adirondack Forest Ranger

The quality of this hike, report, video, and photos are so off-the-chart good. Fantastic stuff.

Do hikers consume more beer than the average person?

I don't drink beer. Hate it, always have. Tastes like low tide. Find it odd that people drink it on purpose, willingly, for pleasure. Maybe that's why I'm not a Red Sox fan.

    Gliders on Franconia Ridge

Every once in a while you see something that stops you in your tracks. Such was the case on Mt Lincoln last weekend. A man was standing with his hiking partner near the summit cairn, talking quietly. He appeared to be in his early 30's. He had those metal crutches that have the extra...

is a WMNF parking pass needed on the Kancamangus?

I'm very well aware of all the deductions from my paycheck...I don't need to take another look. Regarding paying The Man for a WMNF parking pass, I see your point, but it's not a fight I'm interested in taking on. I just don't care about it that much. It's $1.67 per month...I can swing that.

Mount Crawford 08-24-13 : What a great summit...and not too busy!

Very nice. That mountain is one of the best-kept not-so-well-kept secrets in the Whites. If it was 4,001 feet tall, it would be mobbed every nice day. I think your first and seventh photo are the same photo....it's ok, it's worth seeing twice. Nice zoom shot of the train.

is a WMNF parking pass needed on the Kancamangus?

Be careful, they might charge you extra if you pronounce it incorrectly. I just buy the stupid annual pass. I have to drive so far to get there, I can't be wasting time fighting court cases over a law/act I don't give a sh#t about. I hate stupid rules/laws as much as anyone, but this ain't...

Backpacking the Pemi with a baby + Owl’s Head! Aug. 17-18-19

timmus, that was such a great report. Congratulations on the new baby, and it's great that your family is hiking together already. My daughter is 11 months old, and last saturday I carried her up Mt Washington. So I can relate to your feelings of how fun it is to hike with a little baby. But...

    Sunrise from Mt Clay

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I decided on the Jewell Trail for two reasons: 1- The most direct route to Mt Clay. I wanted to be on Mt Clay. 2- No water crossings. I love mountains brooks and rivers, but I don't feel like playing rock-hopping water games at 2am. As you said, the...
