Mt Washington via Tuckerman Ravine and Lion Head (Winter Rte) - 3/10

Date of Hike: Mar. 10, 2013 Trail Conditions: The four lane highway that is the lower half of Tuckerman Ravine Tr was thoroughly packed out, appeared nearly "groomed" from the Cat and snow rangers' snowmobiles and was easy walking with spikes. Lion Head Tr (Winter Route) was a bit deeper and...

Madison via Valley Way and Osgood Trail

Date of Hike: Mar. 7, 2013 Trail Conditions: There was two inches of new snow starting out and due to conditions what was left of Valley Way was buried by new and blown-in snow. It was easy to follow, and there was nothing in the way, but it was slower going and more work than we wanted since...

Osceolas via Greeley Ponds and Mt Osceola Trails - 3/5

Date of Hike: Mar. 5, 2013 Trail Conditions: The snow was stable and well-consolidated the entire trip. Greeley Ponds Trail was well packed, with lots of ski activity in addition to snowshoes, and the crossings were solidly bridged and very supportive... for now. The single blowdown I reported...

Poll: Would you purchase a yearly Hike Safe card?

Thanks. Doing some digging I'm finding the same thing. Found one "long range" UHF "chip" that boast 40-feet. Clearly not suitable.

Poll: Would you purchase a yearly Hike Safe card?

What do they use to "chip" pets? I thought that was RFID with a greater range, no? I admittedly don't know much about this stuff but I had read something somewhere... or so I thought.

An Epic (for me) Hike of North & South Twin/ Galehead Mountain 2-23-13- 1st 1/2

Excellent. Thanks for the report. That hike was epic for us, too. Though we lucked out on the weather: it was -14F but it was sunny and calm.

Winter one-day Presidential Traverse vs. cycling century or running a marathon?

Weather sure can be a factor. Based on what I'm hearing our PT is going to be pushed back a day or two.

    Redliners blogs/websites?

My hiking partner Bill Robichaud ("brobichaud" here on Views) is redlining. He's from Portland. I'm not redlining but I'm pretty much up for all sorts of cool and interesting hikes so he and I get along well. I know we have a ton of mega hikes and backpacks planned for the three seasons, much of...

Winter one-day Presidential Traverse vs. cycling century or running a marathon?

Maybe like doing Owl's Head twice in one day. That would be more miles with far less elevation gain, but just as demanding I think (more so psychologically). We did the Bonds, Zealand, and Hale in a day very recently and are planning a Presi traverse this week so we have wondered the same thing...

Views from Wherever - What are your favorite viewpoints for various summits?

Bonds, Guyot, South Twin, anywhere in the northern Presis, any place that overlooks the Pemi. The list really does go on and on. Last spring I took in a sunrise from Bondcliff. That was sort of okay. ;)

Trail condition predictions for Isolation this coming friday (2/22/13) or weekend

Last time I hiked Isolation, a couple of months ago (after Sandy), we did it from Davis Path and there is a massive blowdown section a little bit before the summit. We went out via Rocky Branch and the trail was clear. I had done the Glen Boulder route the time before that, prior to Sandy, and...

Found: Water Bottle on Avalon Trail - 2/19/13

Like the title says, I found a water bottle on Avalon Trail, before the summit spur I think, but after the A-Z Trail junction. Tell me about it to show it's yours and I'll find a way to get it back to you. Offer valid for thirty days! =] If a member here, use site mail to get in touch...

    When gear goes bad...

I always inspect my gear before leaving and carry supplies I can use to MacGyver my way out of most situations. That said, stuff does happen and usually when it's most inconvenient, right? I just broke one of the crampon teeth on my MSR Lighting Ascents. I wrote to Cascade Designs by email...
