Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Well, better to be late to the party than not at all. Lots of good advice here, I don't have much to add in that respect. I know firsthand that you know your limits, and aren't afraid to turn back when you're outside your comfort zone. Suggestions as to peaks, that I haven't seen...

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

Great shots everyone! Here's my top 10 for the year. It's been a very good year of hiking for me, and I'm looking forward to making 2013 even better. Northern Presidentials from Carter-Moriah Trail descending into Carter Notch, 5/11/12 Alpine grasses on the Tableland of Katahdin, 7/13/12...

    Saddleback for sale...

Perhaps they're using it the other 7,600 acres as a bargaining chip, "hoping to remain involved in the ski area in some capacity" as they say, dangling land for expansion like a carrot in front of the new owners. I agree with the last sentence of the article, that Saddleback is poised to go to...

    Bryan Cuddihee completes the Grid!

RIP Maine Woods National Park - Wilderness protection to multiple use

It seems that locals concerns with regard to motorized and non-motorized access and timber harvesting, would be much better served by creating a National Forest. Doing so would likely improve access, increase tourism (see: $$$), and leave their way of life relatively unscathed. I love my state...

    Shelburne Moriah and Moriah 12/14/12

Usually Mike (NH Tramper) posts trail conditions, however, he's taking an Avalanche Awareness course this weekend and isn't around to post. I hope I can live up to his expectations! :p Trails: Shelburne Trail (north), Kenduskeag Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Mt. Moriah Spur, Rattle River Trail...

    WMNF Forest Road Status

Jefferson Notch Road open as of yesterday (12/12). ~1 mile on either side of Caps Ridge trailhead had a dusting of snow making for interesting (but passable) driving. Also noted that Sawyer River Road was gated when I passed it on the way home.

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

Unless you're in a wilderness area, then you'll have to stop and consult your map. ;) I find myself hiking solo about 60% of the time, though I've had good luck since August hooking up with individuals and groups to hike with. When solo, my go-to phrases when confronted with an especially steep...

This Year's Hiking Season, I am THANKful for....

I'm thankful for: (in no particular order) Trails, long and short. Solo hikes to clear my head. Hikes with new companions, and with old. New places. The testicular fortitude to get out there and make it happen. Honorable mention: Inclement weather (it makes things interesting?)

Trails: Nancy Pond Trail, herd path, Carrigain Notch Trail, Signal Ridge Trail, Sawyer River Road, Rt. 302 Nancy Pond Trail clear up to the base of the cascade. Up through the switchbacks, there are at least two dozen blowdowns, of the step over, climb over, and duck under varieties. A couple...

Saddleback and Saddleback, The Horn 11/16/12

Trails: Hudson Highway ski trail, Tri-Color ski trail, unnamed AT connector, Appalachian Trail, Gray Ghost ski trail Beautiful day to get out and hit these two peaks. There are no snowmaking operations in progress at Saddleback right now, though with their opening slated for December 15th, I...

    Nancy Pond Trail

Thanks for the info dude. I think it's long past time for trickery, 3 extra miles won't kill me! :D

    Nancy Pond Trail

I'm looking to take advantage of what promises to be fantastic weather this weekend, and get some stragglers out of the way. Nancy and Vose Spur in particular. I've seen a conditions report from as recent as today on Carrigain Notch Trail, but haven't seen anything on Nancy Pond since...

    Bipolar East Osceola

Believe me, sleep deprivation is ever hovering over my shoulder. If I'm at home, I can never sleep more than 6 hours (usually it's more like 4) the night before a hike. It doesn't matter if it's 4 miles, or 20, my brain is so excited and on edge, that I can't get to sleep at a reasonable hour...

South Crocker and North Crocker 11/7/12

Trails: CVR, Appalachian Trail Went up and back to the Crockers, to get in a couple peaks before the impending storm. CVR in decent shape, easily passable by my Hyundai (with care in a couple spots). The ground is definitely frozen, but there's minimal ice and snow along the whole route, a...

    a mega-pemi loop bust and 2nd attempt @ 48 x 4 season finish

After that kind of mileage/gain, you definitely deserved a cold beer next to a fire! I think I can happily live the rest of my life without ever again setting foot on that northern section of Lincoln Brook Trail, it's been on the top of my least favorite trails list since I stepped off of it in...

Horn, Bulge, Cabot, Terrace, Weeks, Waumbek, Starr King 10/25/12

In keeping with my goal of trying to complete the NEHH before this time next year, I decided to try and knock four out in a day. I needed the Horn, the Bulge, North Weeks, and South Weeks. So not quite a fully Kilkenny Ridge Traverse, but most of one. I got in contact with Lefty E, who...

West Baldpate and East Baldpate 10/21/12

Out and back from Rt. 26 on the AT. Trails were damp for the most part, some nasty mud in spots, otherwise just wet, sometimes leaf covered, rock. Winds very strong out of the north, most evident in the col and on the climb up the East Baldpate ledges. Great views, even though limited by clouds...
