    2019 Black Fly Season

Saw them yesterday at the base of Mt. Monadnock. Annoying at this stage but gaining force!

I would love to have Mt. Washington get back the world record again but we still have a ways to go!

"Live" Rescue On Facebook: Hiker Lost On Lafayette

Here is the hiker's posting on Facebook as to what happened during his hike: I'm home, probably some mild frostbite but nothing serious. Thank you to all who took me seriously because it was serious. I'll give the whole story below but first I want to emphasize that 911 was my first call and it...

Agree. Church was standing room only. John will not be forgotten. He will be forever remembered in our love.

Don't Ignore The Symptoms Of Heart Issues!!!!!!!!!

A friend in his late 40's that I hike with a lot experienced the same symptoms on a hike and doing yard work at his home. He was smart to get checked a few days later and had a stent placed in his heart. He is also on blood thinners now. Good thread as a reminder to everyone.

So sad...I plan on attending the memorial service on Saturday.

    RIP Paradox :(

I am shocked. John was my dentist the past few years in Plymouth and we've hiked in winter to Isolation and Hale via Firewarden's Trail. I saw him a couple of months ago sharing his enjoyment of his new passion, kayaking, as I looked on at the pictures he proudly posted on the wall in his...

F&G at Breaking Point for Rescue Funding

The Fish and Game is underfunded for one reason...lawmakers don't want to raise taxes to take care of the agency as well as other agencies. Because of that the F&G is scrambling to find funding, blaming it on 'search and rescue' and now looking for federal government assistance...the State...

    Age-related "power endurance" limitations?

Just turned 64, hike regularly and actually feel pretty good. Not hitting the wall just yet! I also work out on the gym 2-3 times a week regularly using the elliptical but I don't use the bars so my legs get the brunt of the workout. I've noticed that I'm getting a bit slower than my younger...

    Bunnell Notch Trail ?

It might no longer be maintained but it is still easy to follow. The trail can be wet. There is one stream crossing about 0.1 mile before reaching the Bunnell Notch Trail however I do not know the difficulty in high water.

    All the near misses

Good reminder about ankles as we get older. I still wear mid-high boots for exactly that reason.

    All the near misses

Excellent thread. Rolled ankles is a common injury which I've helped a couple people get down...one of which was actually broken in a few places when he went to the hospital to get it checked. I slipped once and severely pulled my groin where I actually passed out for about 30 seconds...luckily...

    Mittersill

I've not hiked it in about 5 years but I would vouch for the conditions TDawg mentioned. You can find side trails/ski trails to bypass some of these badly sections in some...but not all...cases. That said, once you reach the ridge and use it to hike up Cannon, it is pretty cool. You have to hike...

    Franconia Notch parking survey

Sierra, I'm with you 100%. A gracious start would be a policeman monitoring people parking on the sides of the road for a few hours each morning, walking up to them and let them know if they park there, they will be fined. If one person starts parking next to the NO PARKING signs others will...

    Franconia Notch parking survey

Franconia Notch Parking I was driving up I-93 tonight and saw on the signs that change messages something about only parking allowed on approved lots. Don't know much more than that but it sounds like they will be preventing parking along side the road.

Regarding the policy change, I know for a fact. :)

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

I've been submitting names for my 10+ helpers for the past ten years, and the Forest Service always accepted my submission for my helpers for the parking pass who worked intermittently from year to year. If you are working solo it's probably not obvious to you. A previous post you have not...

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

To clarify, I've been tracking who has been helping out for many years. I had someone who did 8 hours in 2014 and did another 8 hours in June 2018 but because of new rules, he cannot get a parking pass. Then again, three us did 8 hours in December 2017 and another 8 hours in June of this year so...

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

Our group does trail maintenance because we want to give back. The WMNF policy has always been that they will provide a free parking pass after 16 hours of work. It's a nice bonus...it's not something we do trail maintenance for...but it's a nice gesture. The new policy is that people must do...
