Agressive Male Spruce Grouse up near Middle Carter

I've been attacked by grouse a couple of times...in all cases the female was protecting her chicks. They become unrelenting with the attacks and in both cases flew up to my chest. One time, I decided to walk off the trail to get around and she still attacked me so I had to take a stick to bat...

    Brendas Kitchen Twin Mountain

Granma's is great but off the beaten path. When I lived further south I would grab a coffee at the Fabyan's gas station and wait until Lincoln for a burger & brew at Woodstock Station. It's not that far from Twin Mountain.

    4000 footers near Rumney

The closest peak to get to from Rumney would be Mount Moosilauke; about 15 minutes. After that you are looking at a 45 minute drive to the others mentioned above.

    EMS Going Bankrupt?

From reading this thread...everyone thinks that EMS is finished...I'm not jumping to that conclusion. There are some good testimonials posted here. What will most likely happen is that some stores will close [too many] and they might offer more name brands versus their own. It's a matter of...

    Trail Adopters Needed

I'm able to get about 10 friends in early June soon after Tripoli Road opens up. We split up into two groups starting from each end with more people going up the Tripoli Road end. We brush back the entire ridge between both peaks every other year and on the off year focus on something that...

    Trail Adopters Needed

Great overview and useful information as to what adopting a trail is all about. I've been adopting and performing trail maintenance for about 25 years now and enjoy it very much. Currently maintaining the entire length of the Mt. Osceola Trail from Tripoli Road to the Greeley Ponds Trail.

    Edmunds Col Fatality

Has there been any word or press as to what may have happened to this victim?

    Edmunds Col Fatality

I was coming off North Kinsman last weekend with sections of significant ice flows. MicroSpikes were fine going up but decided to use 12-point crampons for the descent. I agree that I was concerned about the front two fangs snagging on a root or rock. I thought about going back to MicroSpikes...

    Edmunds Col Fatality

I think back that before MicroSpikes came around...we were using YakTrax. But many of us also carried/used crampons more often than we do today...me included. Sorry for going off topic...this is really about the fatality.

    Coldplay on Mt. Tecumseh 2/12/16

Mt. Tecumseh is also known as the Waterville Valley Ski Area. It's the lowest 4,000 footer at 4003 feet. To make it interesting, we left the Mt. Tecumseh Trail halfway up and used the closed Tangent Ski Trail to reach the Schwendi Hut for views and brews! We used MicroSpikes the entire hike. We...

North Twin Bushwhack(alternative) from Little River Road

I did the same thing as you last year! Since the road was not heavily travelled and because of fresh snow, I found the road more difficult to use than taking the BW which is heavily travelled.

Has anyone skiied Moosilauke this winter?

Was hiking down the Carriage Rd. two weeks ago and met a skier who was skiing down near the Snapper Trail junction. I asked him he reached the summit and he indicated he did. I'm not sure if that meant he skied to the top. He skied the Carriage Rd. up and down. There were rocks sticking out...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

I know a judge who told me that if someone in the goodness of their heart, and was not being paid, was volunteering to lead a trip and/or put together a group for trail maintenance, and was subsequently sued for an accident it would be thrown out of court unless it could be proven there was...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

I guess the way around this is to not have any volunteers working on trails claim they are working under a 'volunteer organization' since DRED carries liability insurance for volunteers and not 'volunteer organizations.' A 'volunteer organization' could be getting people together but that is...

New Hampshire HB 1569 to Impact Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups

This bill is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of...OK maybe not given the composition of the today's legislature. My small organization maintains a trail in the WMNF and if they adopted the same requirements you just stated as the State of NH, we would be done volunteering. Why should...

New England 67 in 1 winter season

I was at the 4,000 footer awards dinner when Patrick Cushing/Bombadil got up to pick up his certificate. I think he was the last person to get his certificate and everyone stood up to applaud LOUDLY. I'm still in awe of his achievement a few years later.

Emma has her 15 minutes of fame and more

Fantastic! I'm really enjoying seeing so many dogs on the trail when hiking. I'm sure each dog has a story to tell. I actually call them "kids" when I seem them on the trail with their exuberance in full display! Love it!

    Chemical Hand Warmers

I buy a box from the local hardware store...don't recall the name...I think they are Grabbers. EMS sells a brand called YakTrax which I recommend you don't buy. I bought a box for last winter and the pouches kept breaking and I ended up having charcoal in my mittens. When I went to EMS a couple...

    Jewell Trail Bridge Status?

These boards did not seem to be well anchored so in the event of a heavy rainstorm, I could see them being washed away. Since I was there twice this summer, I was actually surprised to still see them there on August 29th. I was thinking the Forest Service or Cog Railway staff was checking on...
