    Tuckerman Ravine Hike and Sled

Sledding! Yet another sport to add to the list in winter! We had our SledFest and it was a blast. We hiked up 2.4 miles up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail from the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center with a brief stop to the Hermit Lake Shelter. We were granted a sunny start but as we climbed higher it...

    Snow totals

8 inches in Waterville Valley, Campton-Thornton area. I took a hike to the Welsh Ledges yesterday and the snow is so light/fluffy that my snowshoes were hitting the ice underneath. Just a word of precaution. Hopefully with the sun helping to consolidate the snow, the trails cover the ice.

Powdah Day On Welsh Mountain Ledges

Work was cancelled today due to the Northeast blizzard! I'm not complaining mind you. :-) I was in the mood to put on my snowshoes for the first time this winter and make fresh tracks. I wasn't in the mood to drive anywhere so I decided to walk...or should I say snowshoe...to the Welsh Mountain...

Mt Isolation Engine Hill and Davis path bushwacks - more info, please

What I do is at Engine Hill Pass where it is flat, look for the T carved into a tree on the right. Start your bushwhack from there by taking a right and stay at the elevation...might even be better to start a little higher. You'll enter the beautiful birch glades and you'll start noticing that...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

I did that a couple of times...a lot of uphill but I really liked the ski trek beside the brook and when it leveled off the section near the ponds. Lots of animal tracks! Probably the best thing to do now is to an up and back using Livermore Trail but still take the Kancamagus Brook trail to...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

I loved this backcountry ski trek in winter as well and will miss it. I was just talking to a friend this weekend in fact and there is more incentive now to use the x-c ski trail from the Kanc because the ponds are a great destination using backcountry skis in winter. It is a steady ascent and...

Sure to Be Removed - Patriot's Postseason

I would have loved to be at that game! As you said, a game that will be talked about for many years to come.

Sure to Be Removed - Patriot's Postseason

If you're a die hard hiker like me, I just start earlier so I can get home in time to watch the game. Although in most cases, I have the DVR taping in case I arrive late and then I fast forward thru all the commercials. ;)

Sure to Be Removed - Patriot's Postseason

It's the Pats vs. the Colts! It's going to be another nail baiter with the Pats prevailing! The Pats are going to have to run the ball like the last time they played to Colts to keep the ball out of Luck's hands. When Luck does have the ball, they have to do a better job than the Broncos did...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

That's probably the only time it would be best to do it.

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

The two bridges are gone on the former route so one would have to carefully cross the river for a bushwhack of the entire former route. A short bushwhack might be possible after crossing the river on the new bridge going north rather than making the ascent of the new route but there may be a lot...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

The trail might be so wide because I think they were using a tractor to haul the steel beams over to make the bridge and for the general moving of trees away from the trail corridor. The trail is wide enough to possibly make snowplow turns down the steep descents [steep in terms of cross-country...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

Light snow was falling when I woke up coating all the trees with a dusting of snow. The sun came out by the time I started the hike, the temperature was around 25 degrees and there were light winds. Greeley Ponds Trail from Waterville Valley has been closed since Hurricane Irene in 2011 due to...

    Winter Thaw hikes

I like referring to the AMC backcountry trail conditions as a means to gauge trail conditions focusing on the reports from the Huts that remain open. Based on the Christmas Day report from Carter Notch Hut: " Packed with areas of slush. Snowshoes are highly recommended, micro spikes are a good...

Hikers Discover The Shocking Truth About November In The Mountains

Or maybe the guy or his girlfriend...hmmm...wasn't straight after all. I'm just saying. :) Sometimes youth is wasted on the wrong people when they are young once they realize they are gay. [I just had to make a comment. I fully understand what you were saying...especially if they were...

Will You Buy a NH HikeSafe Card?

I don't plan on buying one. I'll take a risk that I'll have to pay if I'm negligent...highly unlikely. Perhaps the best approach to raise funds is to find out if EMS, AMC, etc. would contribute to the fund and that would give them the right to display some sort of seal on their website and...

Boott Spur Winter Trip Report 11/8/14

Winter has begun in the high peaks! Down low, the snow was minimal (fallen leaves were still visible). As we approached the first outlook, the snow got slightly deeper and the trail got steeper, but not to the point where we needed spikes. At the top of Boott Spur, it was clear with...
