    boots with support

I have a left ankle issue due to three surgeries that has now come down to arthritis pain. I sometimes need a cortisone injection. I had orthotics made for my boots which has helped and I purchase high ankle boots. I just purchased Salewa Alp Trainer Mid GTX Backpacking boots online from EMS...

    Trail Adopting 2014

Thank you! Giff and the Forest Service provide a training workshop that I attended last year. It was great to meet the other trail adopters and get a refresher on trail maintenance techniques.

Thanks for the trip report. Long day but sounds like you had a good time. I'm assuming you drank the half glass of scotch the next morning. :)

    Trail conditions in spring

In April, I usually decide to hike in Southern NH or the seacoast where most of the snow has melted and signs of spring begin to emerge. It gives me an excuse to explore lesser peaks and trails. It depends on the season/weather, but I usually start running into problems with black flies in the...

Cost of hiking on Franconia Ridge - fail

A friend at work who only has one leg was part of the commission in NH that reviews appeals including the one AMC raised with building the ramp. I asked him why in the hell did the commission force the AMC to build that ramp knowing that .00001 percent who are wheelchair bound would use it. The...

Which Trails Get Broken Out The Fastest In The Whites

I would like to point out that while it's great to wait for others to break a trail, I think that everyone should share the burden and take the initiative to break a trail at the expense of not making the summit. Just my two cents...:D

    trail crew book

Some would argue that trails in Wilderness areas should have the same standards as other trails for safety reasons, encourage those unfamiliar with those areas to explore them and that easier access to the forest will help ensure that the next generation will care about protecting them as much...

Waterville Valley Nordic pass required for Livermore Rd.?

No, you do not. I was at the trailhead last Saturday and there was not many parking spaces, but then again, I arrived at 1pm which is probably their peak. Livermore road will have grooved tracks for a good distance that you can use.

CAUTION for people who hike with dogs

Wow...sorry to hear about your loss. I can only imagine how you feel...especially when it's unexpected. The new pup will bring about a new series of adventures for you.

Just for Laughs, Most Annoying Hiking Partner Behaviors

All these reasons is probably why I like hiking alone  While I can certainly relate with a lot that has been said, one that really bothers me is the guy who won't shut up and babble endlessly about topics I really do not care about.

    New Presidential for you peakbaggers

This site has a map that will tell you exactly where it is. I've never actually been up on it but I'll make a point to check it out next time I'm in the area:

    Unplowed parking lots

I've been up twice in winter and never seen these lots plowed. A 4WD vehicle to access is almost a must.

Congrats to Today's Calendar 4K Finisher - on Mt Hale

I would venture to guess that Tecumseh was the peak he did the most often. Congrats Jeremy...is there a new list to conquer?

Most Difficult New England Winter 4kers

Thanks for the clarification...my bad. It seems I was thinking what applies for bikes also applies for skis which is not the case.

Most Difficult New England Winter 4kers

I've rarely done this so don't consider me an an expert on this subject. That said, I've placed my hiking boots inside my pack and used a basic x-c ski set-up since I was skiing on flat surface. When it came time for the climb, I put my x-c ski boots inside a plastic bag and buried them in the...

Most Difficult New England Winter 4kers

Agree. I also like it because at the Greenleaf Hut I can assess if the weather conditions are good for a summit bid to Lafayette. If not, I was happy to enjoy the views I had from the Agonies and turn around. Once I reach Lafayette summit, I can assess if the weather conditions are good to do...
