I'm there this weekend and could provide specifics Saturday pm. FWIW: I think the Moderators some times over-think Post Positions. It doesn't mean you did anything wrong.

    synthetic vs. treated down….

So yeah, that's the assumption right ? Doesn't it seem relatively unlikely that treated down would have the "energy" to displace water for air ? On a scale that would preserve insulation properties ? (I'm not arguing. I have no idea. Just talking it through.)

    synthetic vs. treated down….

I'll stick my neck out, respond and say *Read My Disclosure after this post: I am not a scientist. I have been using down products for winter camping for just about 40 years. I too have no complaints. "DriDown™ - What it is Simply put, DriDown™ represents the evolution of down insulation...

    Grand Tetons

I'm glad Pudgy G and Head responded as they came to mind in that I remember they've traveled there recently. (No disrespect to you others that have been there, I just remembered Pudgy G and Head off hand.) Only real hike/climb I've done there is Disappointment Peak. We saw "every" animal in...

Squam Lake trails - Cotton Mountain - Sunday 2/16 or Bald Peak/Artist Bluff ?

I'd bet Bald and Artist will require some sort of traction even if they are broken out. While they are nice, short hikes, they are scrambly/exposed in spots.

In a little less snow, just before the turn: Looking straight at the new trail at the turn: You can see the critical trees involved in both sets of photos. Or GPS.

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Okay ! My apologies. I stand corrected. Clearly 46% of the VFTT'rs who have posted this year have taken the poll ! I guess I'm not sure why we're not running into more of you. It's generally pretty quiet out there.

hale via firewardens trail saturday feb 8

The only trick is to not miss the left turn away from the river, it kind of doubles back after a tree. Should be pretty obvious after the recent snow. Paradox probably has a Wiki Tracks download. EDIT: Or what Marysgirl said ;) .

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Not to be a "Debbie Downer" here but: Only the vast majority of people who responded to the poll hike in winter solo. The vast majority of VFTT'rs or the general hiking public did not respond and do not hike winter solo.

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

Rather than quantify my response it was easier to say "I do not hike or climb solo". I certainly don't climb on my own. I'll do a day hike in decent weather by myself. I used to hike alone year 'round and overnight often, but I kind of ran out of things to talk to myself about. I understand the...

Recommendations For A Larger Campground Tent

It sounds like this tent is for "car camping", not backpacking ? I've had good luck in that department with the $75 Walmart or Kmart Family Domes. They are heavy, but make up for that with sturdy construction, vestibule, plenty of room, etc. Spend the rest on (real) inflatable mattresses and a...

Where would you buy (Location, location, location...) ??

We heat with wood when there and leave the oil burner thermostat set at 52' when we're gone. I think we used about 150 gallons of oil last year.

Where would you buy (Location, location, location...) ??

Forest Lake in Dalton/Whitefield is very nice. Clean, big enough. http://www.newenglandmoves.com/property/details/12829/MLS-4085957/319-Forest-Lake-Road-Dalton-NH-03598.aspx

Where would you buy (Location, location, location...) ??

I think on a river or small lake would be okay, depending on how much you wanted to spend. When we started looking we realized quickly that many places do not have a barn or even garage (needed) and that the length of many driveways or private roads would render them very difficult or impossible...

    Winter Tent Challenge '13

That's the type of tent you could find on ebay cheap where someone had wrecked the tent and the fly was good. Keep me in the loop.

Unusual Snow conditions up north an FYI for weekenders

Saturday morning is generally forecast to be around -15 in the Whites. Tuesday, North Conway and Crawford Notch had a lot more snow than Bethlehem. Wednesday night Bethlehem got an additional 6" of powder over 6" of compacted powder. It's going to be very cold and slippery under deep, light...
