Glamping in the Grand Tetons for the Eclipse!

The day you got married we flew into Jackson Hole. Next morning I hiked/climbed Disappointment Peak with a guide. It's a solid half day if you leave very early. Not technically technical but there was an exposed chimney/scramble near the top that the guide roped me in for. Great hike and climb...

    What the &@$"

Live and Learn. And Let Live and Learn, I suppose. Maybe they were Ultra Runners ;) As a Yute I summited Marcy several times in winter in blue jeans and cotton/poly long johns and survived a -15 degree night in a lean-to there in a $50 bag from Caldor.

    Banner Year For Ticks??

Yes. Very bad in western CT. Took about a dozen off the dog a couple weeks ago before her tick shampoo bath and k9 advantix II application. Better since but pants, shirts, Permethrin, Deet, etc will be standard issue in CT. Not sure about NH yet.

    Global Warming and You

Deer. Never were any deer after they were all killed 150 years ago. Extirpated vector host. And hunters reintroduced turkey, habitat improved and hunting decreased. But you know all this. Perhaps I missed the ;) somewhere. I grew up in CT (Lyme ? Not quite, but close.) There was no such thing...

Snow up in the north Country

This site is updated daily, with running totals. It's for Lisbon and I haven't found a similar site for further north and east yet, though I'd like to. http://www.nhweatherdata.com/snowfalllogs.html

    Split-finger mittens: 1+1+3 or 1+2+2?

I have a few sets surplus of "1+1+3" wool liner "shooting" gloves and matching waterproof shells. They used to be easy to find. Not so much currently. They are all I use in winter...

    Saying goodbye to an old friend...Terra T Traildog Oct 13 2003-November 15 2016

You made the very difficult and correct decision. Great dogs are the best. Losing them is the worst. Sleep well, Terra T Traildog. You will be missed.

25 years of temporary, migrating mild to severe pain in feet, ankles, knees is Gout

About every 6 months for the past 25 years, I've experienced mild to severe pain in my feet, ankles or knees. Rarely the same one. It was some sort of inflamatory process that would last a week or so and would generally resolve itself and be gone by the time I saw a Doctor. Good prescription...

Backpacking to fish light kayak/inflatable ?

I could not find that they stocked Zealand or Garfield Pond last year. Sawyer Pond and Lonesome Lake would be fun. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/fishing/trout-aerial.html

Backpacking to fish light kayak/inflatable ?

Anybody have any good experience/luck with a backpacking to fish light kayak/inflatable that you can recommend ? I've seen the $5000.00 ones. I'm looking to start cheap and under 25lbs, to see if this is a habit I pursue. Thanks.

    Rainier

We did a 2 day mountaineering class at the end of May and the 2 night summit at the beginning of June with IMG. I think we were the 2nd, maybe 3rd, group to summit that season. So May is way early. Loved IMG. Food and facilities were excellent. We heard RMI does not do much about food for their...

    Winter Camping

A bag's rating can't be trusted. If you can open the bag up and observe it before you buy it: If it looks like it's filled with helium - that's a good winter bag. If it can't support the weight of it's nylon, there's too little dead air in there to insulate you well. I've mostly winter...

    Helicopter Parked on Haystack

The black helicopter ? We saw it in Franconia Notch around noon. Flying very low. It appeared to stop at the campground briefly and then fly straight up above Falling Waters. Again, very low. There were also some very low flying planes through the Notch at about the same time. Glad they didn't...
