Osprey with babies in Dummer/Milan, NH

It's at the intersection of 110a and 16 in Dummer. It's easy to miss, though, as you are generally making the turn there and not looking up into the power lines.

Osprey with babies in Dummer/Milan, NH

I'll try to edit this and attach a decent video, but at the intersection of 110a and 16 in Dummer, NH there's a place to pull off and easily observe this Osprey family, if you are in the area and interested. (PS: If anyone thinks this is an invasion or should not be disclosed: it's right next...

Hopefully this ends soon. You'd think the Search Teams could lock down a perimeter. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/dna-underwear-escaped-prisoners-found-camp-reports-article-1.2266793

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

It's a good spot with great beer and very decent (limited) food: An old mill building on the river and a short drive back to Bethlehem. In Bethlehem: Rosa Flamingos down stairs is good for an app, salad and/or pizza or dinner with many local brews, like Moat Mtn.

    Kinda sorry they caught him...

"But when a former hiker recognized Hammes from television, he reported him to the authorities, submitting personal hike photos that included the fugitive." I don't know. I think I'd laugh. As long as the guy's not a child molester or killer or some such: Everyone has a Back Story. Could have...

Ultralight 1-person, free-standing tent. Anyone own an LLBean Microlight FS1?

So close the door. ;) "Doctor, it only hurts when I laugh..." Honestly I don't think any of the various tents I own, have owned or have used would keep the rain out if the vestibule was open. Oh and I absolutely only ever buy free standing with a pretty full fly. Just what I prefer in a tent.

Ultralight 1-person, free-standing tent. Anyone own an LLBean Microlight FS1?

I have a Big Agnes UL Seedhouse 1, whatever its called. IMHO the Seedhouse looks like it has more foot and headroom with a less complicated pole configuration. For yout consideration.

Best Short Quick Easy Hikes In NH

Zealand Trail to the hut is flat and scenic, so agree there. Parking maybe tough. The Rocks Estate is a tree farm in Bethlehem with great views of the Whites. The biggest bang for the short buck, IMHO, is Bald Mountain and Artist's Bluff out of the dirt parking lot across from the Cannon...

Polly's in Sugar Hill has reopened after a big renovation. I didn't eat there before and haven't since, but I'm sure it's the same or better.

    Kinsman Ridge Trail conditions question

Do you mean from Cannon to North Kinsman or parking to the summit ? I'd just bring mud boots and spikes. Not even spikes if it's parking to summit.

How We Got Safely Out of White-Out Winter Conditions Above Tree Line - Share Stories

This was at the top of Abol Slide heading to the summit of Katahdin. We placed wands to find our way back to the trail off the plateau/summit area. We wandered around a bit to find the summit sign. Missing the trail down would have been inconvenient.

What makes a quality knife ? Metallurgy, Advertising, the Sharpener ?

"Cutco uses a three step heat-treating process: 1) Heat treating in the belt furnace, 2) Cryogenic (deep freeze), 3) Draw temper in walk-in oven." My normal "going out" knife is a Buck 290 locking and a small Swiss Army. I ordered a couple of the Lansky products. Some overlap, but should be...

What makes a quality knife ? Metallurgy, Advertising, the Sharpener ?

Thanks. Lots of great info. I owe you a couple beers. I'm primarily interested in being able to keep the knives I currently own ASAP (As Sharp As Possible) for processing meat myself. I own one large set of various Cutco knives and a couple other sets of cheaper knives. I've never needed to...

What makes a quality knife ? Metallurgy, Advertising, the Sharpener ?

Knives are weird. You can spend $3 or $300 on one that looks the same as the other. Like most boys and outdoors people I love a good looking knife, but I'm about 30 years past the "Ego" part of the purchase. We bought a relatively expensive Cutco kitchen set 12 years ago from my niece and...
