    Sad Day on Jefferson

Wow. That's some bad karma for them, unless they really believed they were too weak to be helpful. Thanks to you and yours for staying.

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

In Bethlehem, the pinkish red restaurant at the intersection 302 & 142 has reopened. This time it's "Sage". Previously "Tara" then "Root". There specialty, again, is locally sourced food. Upstairs the bar is nice. The Gruyere Quesadilla and Spring Rolls were very good. I had Iron Mikes in a can...

Sharing the woods with black bears

I'd rather take my chances then listen to dang gun dog bell all day ;). A dog on a leash is good company/"protection". As mentioned: Pepper Spray will deter more than bear, but point it down wind. We've got a big male in the neighborhood and we're on the same schedule, early morning and mid...

    which trail to the Carters?

If I wanted South and Middle, I'd go up 19 Mile (nice grade) to Carter Dome Trail, north over those 2 and then down North Carter Trail & Imp Trail. There's probably a bushwhack at the point in the Imp Trail where it switches back to the northwest that you could cross Cowboy Brook back to 19...

    Adirondack Newbie

I think it's difficult to beat all the options when hiking out of the Marcy Dam area: [Wright, Algonquin, Iroquois], [Avalanche Lake, Colden], [Marcy, Tabletop, Phelps], [Street and Nye]. You can also snag [Cascade and Porter] on your first or last day. "Tmax And Topo's" is great to stay at for...

Does hiking help your body or break it down?

Before I got back into hiking I had bad knees and had never had a hernia pop & repaired. Those are not now the case. On balance and in moderation it's been a net positive.

We used IMG for Rainier, who were fantastic. They appear to be booked, though, for 2014. http://www.mountainguides.com/whitney.shtml

calm paddling and camping opps in northern whites ?

Umbagog looks like a small Lake George, which I like. The remote sites there might be perfect, if available. http://www.nhstateparks.org/uploads/pdf/Umbagog-Lake-Remote_Campground-Map.pdf I'll research the other recommendations too. Thanks.

calm paddling and camping opps in northern whites ?

We have a few newbie paddlers who would like to paddle to an overnight and back, or get dropped off and paddle to camping. Do you have any lake, reservoir or no-rapids rivers suggestions for us ?

Snoring and staying at an AMC hut advice?

:) Love this post. My gut reaction to the OP is: Snoring is THE WORST. If you know you snore, stay out of public sleep areas. YOU'RE happily sleeping and WE'RE wide AWAKE !!! My considered reaction is: You get what you get in public sleep areas and this is why I tent. There aren't earplugs good...

    Lupines status around WMNF area?

I'd say lupines are at 10 to 20% in Sugar Hill this morning. Lewis Hill Road in Bethlehem had more, if you're just looking for flowers. Nothing at The Rocks Estate, never will be there per the Property Manager/Chief. He says everything is 2 or 3 weeks behind normal right now.

2 Alpine Ascents guides and 4 clients on Mt Rainier

"the Liberty Ridge route, one of the toughest and deadliest ways up the mountain." Carbon Glacier is on the north side. This is the very early start of the "Summer" season. Very sad. http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-climbers-mt-rainier-feared-dead-20140531-story.html...

Aerial views and story of the Mt St Helens eruption

In the Visitor Center/Museum there is a great picture of a climber or 2 (from behind) on Rainier who have stopped to watch Mt St Helens. Now that I mention it, I can't remember if the scene was during the eruption, just before or after. Does anyone know if Rainier was open during the eruption ...
