    Winter Tent Challenge '13

If you stake out all the guy lines properly and tension them later, you'd probably avoid the "peanutting".

Thermolite Reactor Extreme Liner -- good/bad?

http://www.campsaver.com/seedhouse-sl-1-tent-1-person-3-season I have a small, light, one person tent as well. I do generally prefer the independence of a tent vs counting on shelter space being available. I'll also say I've never had a problem in the winter in the Adirondacks finding shelter...

Thermolite Reactor Extreme Liner -- good/bad?

Campmor has a nylon breathable sleeping bag cover for $40. I've used basically the same with my bag & 2 pads in shelters in the the dacks and been very comfortable. They compare the Thermolite to lighter than a fleece liner, which is nice too, but not at that price, I wouldn't think.

    Trees - the Spreading Menace

Agree. There are way too many overgrown roadside trees. Many are 50 to 75 years old now and starting to rot. There's also vines and invasive plants. Views are nice, but if towns and states don't start aggressive near-road clearing there will be increased accidents and power outages. I'm not...

    Microspike sizing

There would be a substantially different sizing "feel" based on ambient temperature and your situation: eg wearing gloves on a snow pile or bare-handed in a living room ?

    Speed trap

I recently received a speeding ticket in MA on 91 at exit 24 to 26. My first in about 15 years. I was doing about 84mph. On 91, with little or no traffic, I do usually cruise at about 78 and have never gotten a ticket at that speed. He was a young State Trooper and only asked me where I was...

    Food When Winter Hiking

Crap. Winter hiking is your excuse to eat WHATEVER you want. As long as it's highly consumable. I like high fat and protein. If they made Reese's, Sardine and Peperoni pizza, I would bring several cold slices. The best food is the food that's eaten, not carried home. To drink I like a...

    A dozen ways to die

 Perhaps that's why nobody speaks to me when I wear my helmet. :) I've hiked in camo'd kevlar head and body armor to see what it felt like. I really don't care if someone isn't sure about me or my garb.

    A dozen ways to die

I prefer not to go alone in winter but I have worn a skiing helmet and don't think it's a bad idea to bring a section of rope.

Which warms you up faster, up or down? (Winter)

the scientific method would dictate trying to go downhill first in the same temps. i think then you'd feel cold going down and fine coming up. it'd be you, not the direction. i know i warm up quickly because i don't hike as often as you. you're metabolism is probably in first or second gear...

    Your Choice for Winter Boots

I agree with most of this, especially that it's critical to find a boot in the right size. I also have wide feet. Danner, Montrail and New Balance all have (had ?) wide options. When I go out in Winter, though, (especially if I know I'll be in snowshoes and/or crampons) I almost always grab my...

Bad knees but still spending $ to hike

From Tom Rankin via Albert Camus, “In the depths of Summer, I finally learned that there lay within me an invincible Winter”! Snow is quite possibly worse that crack. Let me know when you might head to NH. Lots of other sub-4000' trails. Heck we could even have my boys drive us in on their...

White gas or isobutane stove for winter camping?

White gas. Yes. I also reject that they are heavier as most canister users carry 2 canisters since they never know when they'll run out. Having said that, I haven't seen the inverted canister in use, as vino recommends.

    Cooking in Your Winter Tent

the only time i remember cooking in my tent, my tent partner knocked over the just now boiling water and it scalded my thighs. so i didn't do that again. not that you can't. just be careful. what stove will you be using? my primus puts up a higher flame until it warms up.
