Carters and 'Cats and Bears, oh my!

Set off up the Imp Trail Saturday morning, 11/5. Trail was in good shape other than some muddy spots down low and a spattering of ice and snow near its junction with North Carter Trail. North Carter Trail was snow coated and a little icy- found traction helpful up to Middle Carter. Up top...

Ed Hawkins finishes 65th loop of the NH 48

AND he's always smiling and HAPPY! There is something to be said for Hiking for a Living! (If only we could get paid to do it...)

    Looking for snowless/iceless peaks

How about Willard? It's 1.5 miles each way out of the Highland Center. It's well described in the White Mountain Guide as the best views for the least amount of effort (rises less than 1000 feet to 3000' high or so). Everyone I have ever taken there has been stunned by the scenery

Car break ins on Zealand Road

It makes a good case for the Forest Service to let people sleep in their cars. I thwarted some "bad boys" once in the Appalachia parking lot when they shined their flashlight on me in my car...they hightailed it out too fast for me to catch their plate.

    sleeping in your car

I forgot my tent poles the other night so I slept in my Saturn sedan at the Oliverian Brook Trail (My back seat folds down and with mattress, I am pretty cozy with my legs extended in to the trunk). At midnight, I heard a car arrive and by the large spotlights, I could tell it was the forest...

    Pierce/Eisenhower conditions

I would bet your girlfriend would be fine with this route. Maybe a little snow just before Pierce but nothing on the ridge, I'd wager. Go for it! Should be a great day for being there.

    Carters and Mt. Hight

Hiked the Carters and Mt. Hight Sunday, May 16. 19 Mile Brook Trail completely dry (brook was a raging river, though). Some snow on Carter Dome Trail to Zeta Pass- both water crossings manageable. At Zeta, snow shoes were helpful to South and Middle Carter, though last half mile to Middle...

    Rescue on Adams

I was surprised when I first read that he fell "100 feet"..."100 yards" on the Gulfside Trail... (the initial news accounts) and needed help. 1500 feet is unbelievable. What a lucky hiker he was to have survived. Even with crampons on Lafayette Saturday, I was nervous crossing Franconia Ridge...

    Rescue on Adams

I read this morning in the Union Leader that they reached him around 9:30pm or so. Wonder if he had crampons or not. Franconia Ridge by Lafayette and Lincoln were terribly icy Saturday. I was surprised to see several people heading up with no traction. Thank you Search and Rescue.

    donna does Coe

Phew!!! Congratulations, Donna! I had left you a good luck note at the Baxter boundary, forgetting that you wouldn't be entering that way! So glad you made it- it's amazing how much sweeter the peaks are that we have to fight so hard for. Way to go and nice trip report "bait" on the title!

Getting Lucky in Baxter- Winter 115

Frodo- the Bonds on St. Patrick's Day with you and Stinkyfeet still reigns as one of the best. I knew a few "Rock stars" were heading in to Coe but didn't know you were going too. I've been waiting anxiously to hear if that one "saucy woman" made it to Coe- sure hope so. Looking forward to...

Getting Lucky in Baxter- Winter 115

Baxter Park is quite a place. All of us who pursue the "lists" often find a peak or two which confound us... the Sewards or Santoninis in NY... maybe Owl's Head or West Bond in the Whites... for me it was Katahdin and Hamlin in Maine. Part of this was due to the logistics and regulation of...
