Wildcat new owners - Polecat still open?

I would like to take this moment to put in a plug for the Lovely Wildcat Ridge Trail from Lost Pond and over E peak. It is a lovely little hike that feels more like a hike since you are not dodging skiiers and boarders. It is well brushed out and easy to follow. But of course I am biased. :D...

    Bushwacks?

*cough* hence I put the word whack in " ". ;) Brian

    Bushwacks?

Ahh but remember, we are dealing with a bureaucracy here. And as we know these things never make sense. :D While the USFS can't afford to spend money on maintaining what they have they somehow find it justifiable to enforce Wilderness regulations....yeah, it does not make sense to me either...

    Bushwacks?

I am assuming by the inference used when you say "bushwhack" I assume you mean ones like Black Pond to Owl's Head or the more notable watercrossing avoiding "whack" on the North Twin trail. If so then basically Tom has it nailed. The USFS has trouble maintaining all the trails they currently...

Lincoln woods? Closed winter roads? All made easy.

I'm kind of fond of this actually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LaUvlnDyyI&feature=related :D Brian

    Howker Ridge Trail this Winter

Your mention of spruce also reminded me..... It has been a few years since I was on Howker Ridge trail, but when I was the trail had grown in so bad with spruce around the 3000 foot plateau that I was having trouble finding the trail. And this was summer. It was almost more bushwhack than...

    Howker Ridge Trail this Winter

Yeah, pretty much count on it. I have heard occasionally of it being broken out (not necessarily all the way) but that is always the rare exception. Brian

    52 With A View...or no more views?

I am also going to disagree with Stinson being "poor". I thought the panorama from the old tower site was simply delightful. Brian

Wal Mart Poles vs the Expensive Stuff

And that is my deal too. I KNOW I will snap a pair of expensive poles as quickly as the cheap ones. It is not really a matter of "quality" material vs "cheap" material. It is the simple fact that I am a tall person (thus my poles are usually extended almost to their limits, thus compounding...

Wal Mart Poles vs the Expensive Stuff

I use the cheapo poles all the time. I usually get over a year from each set, but mind you I am very rough on them. I use them (literally) to whack trees while bushwhacking. I get them jammed in snow when taking spills. They get dented, scraped, bent, smashed and rebent back into a somewhat...

    7 Summits with Puck

Looks like a fun time there fellas! One of these days I have to mosey my arse on over to those little hills you got up there in Northern New York. :D Brian

    Twins-Galehead 2/13/11

That was our biggest headache last weekend. There was no pack or track when we broke it out last weekend, and of course that first bit between the hut and the first junction can be very confusing. I had not been there in at least 5 years, and the other two with me did not recognize anything...

Imp Tail cut-off to 19 Mile trailhead

As peakbagger mentioned, the 1st one is very obvious. There is a point where the trail crosses an old logging road. If you turn left on this logging road it takes you a short distance right to a field behind Camp Dodge. Just follow the driveway out to the road and it is a relatively short...

    Carrying GPS on pack strap?

I have two water bottle parkas I carry on me year round, one for water, the other to keep a bit of food close at hand. I have taken to stuffing my 60Cx into the parka with the food in it. Receives signal no problem, 100% of the time, even zipered up and in the hellish of spruce forests. Brian

A Reflection On the Mountains We All Love

It goes in and out of printing. I got a softcover version at Barnes and Nobles about 5 years ago, brand new, fresh printing, $25. Sentimentality aside the reason is that it really only has a limited appeal to a "niche" group, thus it would not be profitable for a publisher to keep it in...

favorite/most convenient town in the Whites ?

For me it would be either Lancaster or Berlin. For me both are in a good general position for hiking in the Whites and for hiking and hunting in the more northern parts of the Coos county. Lancaster has a more "small New England town" feel while Berlin has a "where everyone knows your name"...
