    North Percy Peak camping

Well I was just mentioning the car parking thing because while en route to hiking the Percy's recently, I think I saw a sign on the Nash Stream road that said something to the effect of, "No overnight parking." Maybe I'm wrong. Which led me to believe you may have to be on an extended backpack...

    North Percy Peak camping

Oh yea, lame! Except, obviously, if you hike in on the Coos and stay at the Percy Campsite? Like say via the Old Summer Club trail with your vehicle parked out of the NSF?

    North Percy Peak camping

Lots of flat ledge on or near the summit, careful around the vegetation.

Setting Things Straight: An Easy Backpack 8/24-25/12

I've also enjoyed the sunset/rise sleeping out on Dickey. Great for a quick night out. Great pics as always.

Better map for Baxter State Park

Hi all, Looking to upgrade my map of BSP. I have the paper AMC version but am looking for a waterproof map. A quick google search yields: 1) The Nat Geo map, looks nice and I like my Allagash maps from Nat Geo, this one is a little more expensive. 2) Map Adventures, also looks pretty good...

Route for Isolation - Glen Boulder or Rocky Branch?

I recently did the trip with a bike spot at the the Glen Boulder trailhead, locked it to a tree off in the woods. Up Rocky Branch to Iso, then up Davis and down Glen Boulder. I really enjoyed the 95% downhill bike ride at the end of the day and was back at the GB trailhead to pick up the...

Kearsage North Loop Trip via normal route up and Red Dot trail down

I've thought of a similar hike for next time up Kearsarge North, nicely done. I took this picture of a map kiosk after hiking Black Cap. The Red Dot trail is the "Shingle Pond trail" on this map, right?? The land does appear to be mostly owned by The Nature Conservancy.

14ers.com discussion leads to rescue of abandoned @ 13k' CO dog

Well, I thumbed through the 14ers site and found the page where the owner comes out to explain himself and the comments go on from there. Some compassionate, some not so much. Unfortunately, he's taking a pretty good flogging. Including things like this: He goes by "aortolani14" and his first...

14ers.com discussion leads to rescue of abandoned @ 13k' CO dog

Wow, tough situation. If (according to the second link) he indeed had a kid with him to get off the mountain, his responsibility definitely rests with the adolescent. But, it's tough to wrap my head around not going back up with your own crew to try SOMETHING. Even if it's a recovery, it's...

    Routes to the Kinsmans

I didn't say easy climbing, definitely rough. Young legs helped, certainly. ;) :) I thought it had some unique views down over Bog Pond and really liked it, the quiet side of the Kinsmans.

    Routes to the Kinsmans

This. Hiked it back in April with a couple friends and the GF, an easy car spot if you will have two vehicles. Some fun climbing and beautiful ledges on the south side of S. Kinsman. Took some pics if you're interested.

Deer Flies in the North Country

Tried to hike Albany Mtn from the south yesterday. Driving up the end of Birch Ave, my brothers car was swarmed by I'm guessing 500+ deer flies. We looked at each other and both agreed we weren't even gonna get out of the car. It was disgusting and looked like we were being attacked by bees. His...

    Mtn. Lion Photos ??

There was a "scare" recently in Lincoln. It's pretty funny to me because this blury image taken from the Laconia Savings Bank security cam is a large house cat, IMHO. Funny what people will believe even though reason suggests otherwise. For some decent comedy you can find the associated...

How full are shelters and tent sites on the AT in NH?

Just east of the Rocky Branch crossing on the opposite bank from RB#2 up the trail 50 yards are some designated tentsites. RB#2 is a piece of crap, unfortunately.

Merino Wool Base Layer Top for Summer Hiking

To be specific the Ibex Shak Lite 1/2 zip is a great garment. It's on sale right now for $78.00 on the Ibex site linked. I have the "Shak Jersey" (not sure the difference, both 1/2 zip and 21 micron) I use it as a heavy base layer or a mid-layer when hiking and wears well casually, too. I also...

Lincoln Brook Tr Past Owls Head Slide

Do it! Went through back in late May for the first time and only scratched my head once or twice. If you're reasonably skilled in route-finding I don't think you'll have much trouble. It is quite muddy along the section near the height of land, but also wild and very beautiful. Judging from...

Air National Guard Training this week in Northern NH and VT

Definitely been noticing this the past couple days up in the Lincoln area. F-16 type planes the first day at high altitude, then more A-10 looking the second day a little lower.

Merino Wool Base Layer Top for Summer Hiking

Ibex merino is fantastic stuff and I've found dries VERY quickly. Love it. Definitely on the pricey side but I think it's worth it. Very comfortable to wear against the skin hiking and casually. I usually try to keep an eye on the "outlet" tab on their website and pick things up at a discount.
