    caps ridge tomorrow

If you're set on Jeff, I'd opt for a late start and hope for clearing skies in the afternoon. If flexible, maybe save it for a "Pressie day."

    Denali speed record

Sub 12 hrs up and back. Guy must be in some shape! Anyone heard of him? http://www.alpinist.com/doc/web14s/newsflash-jornet-denali-speed-record Edit: Read up and found he has records on Mt. Blanc and Matterhorn.

My Hike From Mt. Cardigan to Smarts Mountain

The route you're referring to from Cummings Pond is signed near the Smarts summit as the former Clark Pond Loop trail. I have a pic of the sign somewhere from a few years ago.

Black fly reports for your area?

First bites of the season Sunday on Mt. Cube. Overall they weren't bad at all, but I got a few bites and applied spray to my legs.

    Weekend hike to the Bonds

Went Lincoln to Zealand over the past 3 days. Only continuous snow was between the Zealand summit spur and Mt. Guyot. Sporadic monorail between the Guyot South summit and the Mt. Bond summit, and east of Mt Zealand on Twinway. Traction never went on, as rocks/roots were present for stepping or...

    Snow Free Trails 2014

Pick a trail on Mt. Cardigan. Snow free. (Minus a 30 foot section on Manning trail that was a small pain to descend.)

Car camping in the Whites, suggestions please.

Blackberry Crossing would be close to a couple non-hiking destinations along the Kancamagus Highway on the Swift River. Lower Falls, Albany covered bridge, Russell Colbath house, Rocky Gorge and the super easy Lovequist Loop. Never stayed but seems like a nice spot. Fairly close to Conway on the...

    Ledges On Chocorua

I did a similar loop last fall (descent via Weetamoo) and remember at least one side sloping ledge with a big step that gave me pause. If I remember correctly, the ledges were a little damp and I made it. Now as a disclaimer, I'd describe myself as an athletic 30 yr old so your mileage may vary...

Any worry of bears in White Mountains

I'd properly hang your food. Emphasis on properly. But I'll admit that I've been guilty of being lazy and keeping it in my tent with no problem a couple times, but that was at an unestablished spot in the woods. At a tent site with any traffic I'd store properly because it could be on a bear's...

    Moosilauke Summit Sign Gone

Eisenhower would sure take a while to scatter! Although the AT skips Ike, as well.

snow counts?--can we get some reports from the field?

Top of Loon (3000ish feet) had about 10 inches, riding was great. On the heavier side, but lighter with elevation.

    Trail conditions in spring

Living here in Plymouth, I do the same. But go to Ossipees, Belknaps, Ragged, etc with a 4k or two mixed in if I'm up for the punishment spring snow and melt bring. Seeking out south facing slopes where possible.

    Are the rivers overflowing?

Pretty impressive ice jams this morning on the Pemi. At the highway river crossing near exit 29, the ice was up to the base of the train bridge just upstream. Ice as far as I could see in both directions. Flooding of some degree (that I know of) at Pemi Campground and Gilcrest Cottages, and...

    Ammonoosuc in the winter

Yes, but Monroe Brook is avy terrain and you could get into serious **** in the wrong conditions. Beautiful snow descent otherwise.

    Tucks Headwall Avalanche

Now that's better, forgiven. I'll blame the Herald's report for leaving out an important detail. ;) Unbelievable that nobody perished in this. Look at exactly what they were swept down in this one... http://nhpr.org/post/rescuers-astounded-two-men-avalanche-escaped-serious-injury

    Tucks Headwall Avalanche

The "not at all familiar with Mt Wash," comment bothers me. Talking to the Herald, who glorifies the ordeal (stupid selfies included) really bothers me. Not using the opportunity in said article to PUBLICLY THANK the rescuers you put in danger out there is inexcusable.

Top 25 "Scenic Hikes" in New England?

Yes it is. Burnt Rock is a beautiful mountain.

Beginner Winter Hiking in the Whites

If you had your sights on Welch-Dickey and don't want to freak out the Mrs., maybe try just going up Dickey. Welch side is steeper and in a couple spots may be intimidating for a beginner with ice and snow. Same goes for inbetween the two peaks. The trail up Dickey is all nice grades for...
