Isolation and Impressive Storm Damage, 11/23/2012

Driver, Corona makes a nice folding saw, I got a 10 inch. I also have a 13" fixed blade. Whatever you get, go with a curved blade for faster cutting. www.coronatools.com

Proud to be a MATC Maintainer!

Good for you! I just enjoyed a night out about a month ago at Knoll tentsite during a 3 day/2 night loop, which I think is within your section? Nice trail through there.

You could attempt to obtain a permit to do so. :p

Water Availability halfway between Moosilauke summit, Beaver brook and Asquam Trail

Not exactly. You will lose elevation going there, but the shelter is above the worst of the steeps.

    Heel lifts on snowshoes

Worth their weight in gold when breaking trail up the steeps!

Bald Pates via Millinocket, ME and Kingston, NY - 11/2

Just got up Baldpate recently myself (my first visit,) what a fantastic peak. And I agree, the MATC really outdid themselves with the rock-work up West Baldpate above the shelter. Had to have been a ton of manhours invested there.

    Keeping photos on camera

I never keep more than a hike or two in the camera without transferring to PC, so I'm with you.

    Long Trail thru-hike

Quite the journey, eh? Thanks for taking me back with the report and pics, congrats on the finish. I hiked it SoBo in '10 during the same time of year. I also dealt with pretty brutal blisters on my toes after the 2nd day so I can relate to that pain-in-the-ass. (foot? :)) I was able to keep...

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

Also use G-10s with a pair of Salomons (I forget the model, but they're soft.) Good idea to carry an extra bar on you in case you snap one.

    The Rules

If someone were to try and tell me my ascent of Jackson didn't "count" because it was put at the end of a Presie traverse, I'd tell them where to go! :D

Pack the raingear for a possible surprise visit from Cousin Sandy next week

WMNF advising against being out from Sunday evening through Wednesday. I sure hope it doesn't undo any post Irene efforts. Praying for minimal rain/wind... http://www.fs.usda.gov/whitemountain

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

No expert here, but I'm not aware of any projects being built there at the moment. But, there are two Maine windfarms which are operating in that general area. Record Hill (Roxbury) and Spruce Mountain (Woodstock) Spruce Mountain has 10 turbines and around 28-30 miles due east of Gorham.

Route 113 in Maine through Evans Notch closure?

Speaking of downed limbs.... Has this widowmaker over 113 come down? I was nervous to drive under it! I imagine is has, since this pic was taken back in July in Evan's. Hopefully not with a car underneath!

    Baxter State Park news

It appears that is true, sardog. Now it looks like you just have to fill out some extra paperwork to travel solo. "Why do you want to camp/climb alone?" :p

    Baxter State Park news

As far as the Northern Peaks trail goes, there was a brand new trail sign on Hamlin Peak when I was there on 10/7. 6.4mi to Russell Pond. Met a kid on trailcrew on Hamlin that had been working on it. He made it sound like it's already open, although maybe not officially.

snow in them thar hills Monday

The scene was fantastic in Baxter State Park on Monday. Winter on the summits, fall in the valleys. The hike up the deteriorated N. Brother spur was "interesting" after the wet weather and snow.

    Photo Sharing Sites

Totally free unless going over 1 GB of file space, then a monthly fee is charged. Correct? I too am fed up with the new Webshots layout, and am looking at Picasa. I have way over 1 GB of photos to put online (12,000+.) If I want to continue sharing all my photos, I think I have to sign up for...
