    Do You Ever Hike Drunk?

WU - I am disgusted that you would have a thread like this to take away from the serious nature and safety of hiking. People die driving to the trailhead, esp in winter due to icy roads... I have actually been blowing off hiking altogether to get drunk. I am finding I am getting more out of...

    VFTT winter gathering 2010?

the planning is going well.... I got team shake and bake on the entertainment committe and "you know who" on pit toilet clean up. coldfeet is in charge of the date selection. There is a better chance of me hiking tom, feild and willey 6 times this winter than actually organizing this event...

    Chocorua, Bluejeans, and sneakers

yea, but there is certainly a faction of the hiker crowd that once they get a few trips under their belts and all of a sudden, they are experts. I know, b/c I fell into this trap as well. After a few trips out and you got all the high tech gear, (the new gore -tex, etc..) you think its fun to...

    Pack Repairs

My favorite climbing pack lost a side compression strap. not sure how it happened, but it got cut (maybe an ice axe, etc..) and I had to cut the rest off. I would hate to buy a new pack as I like this one and with the exception of that, its in great shape... I can't sew and have no interest...

    UL packable down parka

I have had the mountain hardware sub zero hooded for a few years now and it always does the job.. I use it on winter/fall/spring days/nights in NH, I have used it on summer mountaineering trips (rainier, mt blanc, hood, etc.) and it does the trick for everything I do - the only reason I would...

    VFTT winter gathering 2010?

not a chance... I don't know what I am doing next week - never mind jan 2010... if its there, and I am a climbing (ie good weather), I will attend If bad weather, I don't feel the pull to NH as much as I used too..:) Movie or sports night on TV sounds better on crap weather weekends...

    Kinsmans? Kinsmen? 10-25-09

I think I know why I am not a member of the AMC and wouldn't fit in well on an AMC trip... rather than tell them there would have been an officer waiting for them if they didn't put out the fire, I would have whipped a beer out of the pack and joined them...:D to each their own - thats just...

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

100% agree - have yet to see any negligence as well. In fact, I have heard a few SAR people say the same thing... the whole thing is a "stuff happens" event....lets move on and let the courts deal with it... my guess is this fine or whatever it is gets tossed out...and it won't move me to...

    Chocorua, Bluejeans, and sneakers

are you kidding me..... last time I checked, one not needed an 6000 cui pack and down suit to hike this peak.. laughable how some folks assume and make fun of hikers that "look" like they get out once a year. Or - sometimes its the cool thing to do for folks to somehow make fun of foks who...

Interesting Situation at Baxter: Car Boot

well maybe not... I would have never though of a boot - however, sometimes... a ticket is worth it. This was at an AT trailhead and many thru hikers were finishing.... if your family member was finishing (once in a lifetime thing) - maybe a fine is worth being able to see your son or...

    Baxter in Winter question

Can't add much - Frodo's post has the meat of the deal there. If you just trying to "bag" baxter - maybe the Abol trip is your cup of tea. I have done that twice in winter as a day hike. Its about 20 miles. I would say its harder than a bonds traverse. The slide is "steep" and I would def...

Interesting Situation at Baxter: Car Boot

agree - its special. Just takes some simple planning to get in there. We had zero problem getting 2 nights at abol and 2 nights at roaring brook on pretty short notice. The best thing is its not catered to motel dayhikers... and is catered to those that want to camp or backpack. thats what...
