Leki, Probably as good as you'll find.

After my Lekis died this past summer, I bought these and am very impressed so far. Seem to be extremely strong, and don't weigh more than a couple of ounces more than my ultralight Lekis. Flicklock is nice, particularly in the winter. Tons of reviews available on gear sites. BD Spire Elliptic

    Christmas Day Hike

Oh dear I am remembering our previous attempt at this one...think that water crossing's frozen solid yet? Ike & Pierce might be a good Plan B. They're close by, I hear .

Date of Hike: 12-12-09 Trails: Lonesome Lake, Fishin Jimmy, KRT, Lonesome Lake Trail Conditions: The trail was broken out to the hut, then quite a bit less so up to the Kinsmans. There were two hikers in front of us breaking trail who we met near North Kinsman on their return from South...

Boston Beer Night - Thurs Dec 10

beer night parking Just wanted to pass on more information about parking...just in case that was the only thing standing between a "maybe" and a "yes" decision for some of you out there. I called the bar to make sure street parking was readily available and they said that after 5pm they have...

If it's going to be a long hike and you need to carry more than a couple...you can use a handy insulated carrying case. Just remember to recycle!

    Moosilauke and Kinsman traverse 11/14/2009

When you're on a really crappy stretch of trail, that's more like a stream, in the dark, in the ever-heavier rain, after 8 hours of flirting with hypothermia...you really can't go wrong with a little Air Supply. Despite the challenging weather, I had a great day. Shake & Bake!!!!! Rebecca

    UL packable down parka

I was recently looking for the same thing (but for winter, so not sure if it's too much for what you need). Went with the Rab Neutrino Endurance - 850 fill, packs small, weighs a pound, water resistant exterior. I also have the UL inner down jacket from Montbell and find that it's not warm...

    Vermont 50 -- Results?

Thanks for posting pictures Darlene - I'll see if I have any that turned out and post them later. The pics don't really make the conditions look as nasty as they were. Running through the slippery muck all day (or, for those poor mtn bikers, pushing the bike up AND down the hills) surely made...

New York Time article on the Devil's Path in the Catskills

These are the three guys that we hiked with a little while when we did the DP in a day earlier this summer. The author is the "Gear Junkie" that I mentioned back when I did my trip report. I chatted with them for quite a while. The writer lives out in Minnesota, and his friends are regular...

Mt. Denali slide show, Sept 22

The AMC's web site has directions that include parking garage locations. I would think the one at Boston Common is open late. http://www.outdoors.org/about/facilities/facilities-boston-directions.cfm

Wash & Madison via Huntingtons, Gr Gulf, Buttress, Mad Gulf

Sept. 19/20. This little adventure strung together four trails I had never been on. Ryan and I headed out a little after 11 from PNVC and made quick progress to the Huntington Ravine trail. Before too long we were getting great views of the climb up ahead. The base of the climb -"the fan" -...

    Dolomites!

Absolutely not. The only thing is that it's not for people who are overly skittish about exposure. There are quite a few places where a fall would be really, horribly bad. Most of those places have cables, etc. but if you're not comfortable with that you will have trouble. As for physical...

    Dolomites!

continued... Day 7: Weather delay @ Rosetta. The weather turned worse, with the wind and rain picking up overnight. There was virtually no visibility in the morning, although the rain was now just a light mist. My hiking companions from the day before were all headed down to the valley and...

    Dolomites!

I recently returned from Italy where, among other things, I spent ten days in the Dolomites. My intention was to hike the entire length of the Alta Via 2, which is one of the two most popular of the marked long-distance high routes in the region. The route runs north/south and covers...
