I presume Garmin still has a flat fee for fixing things? you might want to just open the baby up and take a look see if you can isolate the broken antenna.... Jay

"Best" Peaks To Hike In VT And NY

...And there are VT firetowers and GMC"s nice little booklet "360deg views" too... There should be a ski resort list as every ski resort seems to have a hikeable trail to it, either by way of the LT/AT or otherwise. Jay

    Baxter - Daicey Pond Feb 20-23 - North Brother/Fort/South Brother/Coe

FYI, if for some reasons your plans change and you are interested in snowshoeing a beautiful small peak. Sentinel Mtn has lovely west side views of the Katahdin Massif. I did that as a day trip from Abol Bridge one winter, breaking trail for a lot of the trip, which was beautiful and felt I had...

Topo ! (National Geographic software) compatibility ?

It's possible, I think windows 7 had an option in the preferences to run it in Windows XP Compatibility mode.. the VM is a worst case scenario cause it's like sort of booting up your machine (jn software) into a special VM simulating Windows 7.. then you'd have to install everything you need...

Topo ! (National Geographic software) compatibility ?

Worst case scenario is you can always try a Windows 7 Virtual Machine running in Windows 8.X I'd google it though and see if you find instances of Topo in native Win8.1 or so... Jay

"Wild" - Pacific Crest Trail movie

saw it on Christmas eve. I haven't read the book and the reason I saw it was honestly, because it was supposedly about the PCT. I thought the movie was good if you went into the movie knowing that the movie was more introspective than the actual journey on the PCT... It was certainly...

Where, when, how to see moose in Vermont?

I read somewhere that there is a lot of moose along the stretch of Arlington-Stratton Road, around the Somerset Reseroir/stratton pond area.. I've never seen one there but Ive only been there a few times... In fact, I don't recall ever seeing a moose in VT, only, NH, ME, MT, AK Jay

Unless that's changed, I was told many years ago that bikes are not allowed to Roaring Brook. They ARE allowed on the tote road though.... You should check with the Ranger station there.... Jay

    Running snowshoe recs

Dion and Northern Lites both come to mind when snowshoe races come to mind. Dion is also in VT if that makes a difference for you. I'm personally a user of the Northern Lite Elites but I don't race, I use them as regular backcountry snowshoes... Jay

LL Bean vs Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter

Noticed that LL Bean sells a filter replacement for the Katadyn Hiker Pro water filter which is like $6ish dollars cheaper than the actual Katadyn brand replacement. Has anybody tried the LL Bean one before? It looks like the Katadyn one has a sponge thing and some siicon lube, neither which I...

Experienced Hiker Looking for a New Mtn Range (i.e. Catskill advice, please)

Should be a nice weekend, weather wise. The bike is always a good idea, I've haven't had any issues with locking a bike in the woods with a simply cable lock... Downhill at the end is nice :) Jay
