date: June 8th Route: Out and back from Lye Brook Access Road Trail is wet and the first big drainage crossing is tricky if you're just in sneakers but nothing is too bad. Trail is wet in certain spots Waterfall is certainly flowing good today after friday's rain. And Irene created a huge...

    Canoe Camping?

May I suggest first obtaining the Adirondack Paddler's Map? It's a big map that covers most of the ADKs which will list primative campsites on many of the lakes and streams up there. Your topic is pretty generic enough to try to narrow down. If you want you can go over on adkforums.com and...

Paddle To, Through, and Around Alaska Adventure

That's a cool trip. There are some pretty serious gorges past Lake Bennett (upper Yukon River) in the Yukon territory.. wonder how frozen they will be... but I guess they are just fast moving... Could only sort of see into the gorges from the lake Bennett which was the end of my backpack...

Date: 5/27/13 Route: Healdville trail out to summit, spur trail to the ski lifts and back Trail is wet as expected but really good shape given the amount of rain last week. Patches of snow around 3000' but nothing to need microspikes for and it will be gone fairly soon. .3 mile spur tail...

Fast Pass High Speed Lane Open at I-93 Tollbooth

NJ, NY has had the 60mph EZ pass lanes for a while now, it is pretty nice not to have to slow down (that much). Most of the exit tolls though are still 5-20mph in NY though.. Of course, it doesn't help anybody when there is a 2 mile backup to the Woodbury Toll plaza on the NY State Thruway...

    Transporting kayaks on car roof

The roofline though may and I know Thule makes a short roofline adapter for their roof racks so it would allow for the minimum spread between the crossbars.. Some of those small compact cars had short rooflines.. jay

    Transporting kayaks on car roof

So, I guess you have figured it out, I was going to ask if it was a "soft top" cadillac, the kind with the fabric like roof.... I had a car that had "gutter" mounts where the fit kit for the thule had veritical fins that would fit in the gutters and then clamped down over the door sill. But I...

Connecticut River - Wilder Dam to Cornish Landing 5/18 - 5/19/13

The portage by Sumner Falls was really muddy too, but then I hit the falls sort of at low tide last summer... Of course, even below the falls, the water levels were pretty low for a bit... Saw a father/son looking for crawdads below the falls too.. Jay

    Steripen Opti (CR123 batteries)

Thanks, this is primarily for a summer trip, but we might be at elevations up to 11k so I don't expect to see temps below the upper 30s (I hope anyway ;) ).. Jay

Poconos / Delaware Water Gap info needed

If you have the time, Mt Tammany is a great hike with great views of the water gap and Mt Minsi. In PA, Mt Minsi is a nice hike too with views from the opposite side. Both are close to the AT, the AT crosses the delaware river on the south side of the I-80 overpass.. and on the PA side...

    Steripen Opti (CR123 batteries)

Since this is a summer trip, I'm not too concerned with the cold performance, but that is what I've read with older generatio steripens. My bike trip goes up to around 11k in some passes but I don't expect to be up there too often and it still would be summer.. REI has the new USB charging...

    Steripen Opti (CR123 batteries)

Any recent experience and/or reviews of this steripen. I've researched this for my long bike ride this summer and it seems they fixed a lot of problems with the units eating batteries even when off and the Opti is a much improved design over the older revisions of this. I think CR123s are also...

    EMS Club 'day' this weekend

I saved nothing because 1)I didn't realize it was on FRI to SAT and not SUN (how dumb is that, so much for the "weekend") and 2)Our super small EMS didn't have any bike computers for me not to buy anyway.... Jay

    USNS Millinocket

Just saw this on Lexus/Nexus (though not the BDNs article) that I thought some of you would be curious as I was and indeed, it is named after the town by BSP. http://bangordailynews.com/2012/05/30/news/penobscot/navy-names-ship-after-2-katahdin-region-towns/ Maybe they can float it down the...

    Trailer hitch bike rack ?

I use the hatch in my Outback but I did have fork mounted bike carriers on the outside. For a hitch mtn, especially with the Outback, I'd suggest you find one that swings out or away in some fashion so you can open the back with the bikes on.. it's a handy feature I would think especially since...

Conditions along AT in MA or nw CT

We got a dusting yesterday and overnight here in Pittsfield on Monday, April 1st. Not enough to impede me from biking to work but it was enough to give a dusting to my grass and even the shoulders of the road. It's certainly cold enough overnight to stick... Jay
