    Catskill Advice

Hunter would fit the bill (as it has a climbable fire tower)... They should have some snow on the ground as it snowed here last night but who knows by tomorrow, your packed down criteria might not even be necessary. As far as trailheads go, the Spruceton Road way (from the west) is...

    Mt Aeolus 8/22/09

I might just spot a bike at the Owl's head trail and hike up from Aeolus and bushwack over to Owl's Head and back down and then ride back to Dorset Hill Road... Jay

    Mt Aeolus 8/22/09

Thanks bogorchis, might not hike this til spring but it's been on the radar ever since I was trip planning Dorset and I passed those access roads to Owl's Head/Aeolus.... Not a big deal since I usually go prepared for anything but thinking of combining the two and make it worthwhile for the...

    Mt Aeolus 8/22/09

*old thread alert* Bringing up this old thread because Aeolus/Owl's Head is on the mind right now (owl's head list), is there a decent herdpath between the two, as I notice there seems to be individual distinct "trails" to each peak, or are the woods somewhat open between the two? Jay

    Okemo area activities

Maddy, I believe there is a distinct non-skiing trail that goes up the backside of Okemo. I don't have the book in front of me but the Green Mountain Club's 360deg Views has a trail description of how to hike up Okemo... Jay

What to use to carry my Hillsounds Pro and BD Contact Crampons

Yeah, I just use any old nylon bag that fits the crampons with the spikes facing each other. I've never had a problem and I've been using the same old bag for years despite the person at Campor who said it wouldn't last long. Jay

Can I carry Microspikes on board my flight ?

I've flown twice to Reno with microspikes in an old nalgene bottle in my checked-in baggage w/o any issue. Usually my boots go in my pack as a carry on as it would be harder and more expensive to replace worn-in hiking boots than $60 microspikes... Jay

    VT Hiking Map and Guide

"Hiking Green Mountain National Forest: Southern Section " by Bruce Scofield is a great book on the southern Greens with not just maps and hiking data but an interesting history of the industry/towns in the area... Covers a lot of small peaks that might not get a lot of mention in areas off...

    Okemo area activities

The Weathersfield trail is the only way I've hiked Ascutney and I've only hiked it once though not terribly long after Irene and the road to the trailhead was posted at the I-91 exit but the actual closure due to Irene was further west so my friend and I was able to get to the Trailhead...

IDEA: Hike/Gathering in each northeast state

As some of you know, Darren, the original owner was quite a paddler as well so we had a splinter paddling group with informal paddle meets in Maine, RI, and at Darren's place for a bit. I got my first kayak not too long before the paddles. In RI, we camped at a defunct private camground in...

Anyone planning an End Of The World Hike 12/21/12 ?

I've heard that it is midnight on the 21st, since midnight is 12:00AM, wouldn't you have to hike on thursday? Maybe we need to find out if these are AMC rules or ADK rules... Maybe one can start just before Midnight... Jay

    Okemo area activities

I'd second Ascutney around Okemo (which you could actually hike as well, but that would be silly if you're there to ski), unless you want a free run)... Jay

IDEA: Hike/Gathering in each northeast state

Tom, That was "hide-a-way campground" and was fairly close to Woodland valley as far as the 6 mile road goes. Greylock would make a for a fun bike ride too as well as a hike! It's really not a tough climb from the south either... (A 35 mile loop could be done via Greylock and Rt 7 or a...

Rounds Rock on Mt Greylock 12-1-2012

Definitely hunting/rifle season so wear your hunter orange. From Visitor's center on Rockwell Road, hiked up the Bradley farm trail to the Northrup trail to Rounds Rock. Checked out the plane wreck and then crossed the road to return to the visitor's center via the Woodason Spring Trail for...

IDEA: Hike/Gathering in each northeast state

Don't forget the one in the catskills, my first VFTT function. the first VFTT person I met in person was Shizzy! Who was cooking up burgers at the Hide-a-way camp as I pulled up in my subaru. I ran into SherpaK and a few other members on the way to the showers at the road but it was just a...

IDEA: Hike/Gathering in each northeast state

I'd certainly would welcome helping out anything related to hiking Mt Greylock. (not my cat of the same name, he is quite the scare-d-cat to have virtual strangers trying to hike him). There's also Mt Tom and the Holyoke Range as well... Jay

Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) has been sold...

We had Bob Stores in NJ, they seem to offer a lot of coupons though not as much as Bloodbath & Beyond but with the coupons, you could get some cheap sneakers and stuff like back-to-school clothes and stuff... I don't really think of them as outdoor work clothes as much as a small dept store...
